Hello
Looking for some help and feedback. I currently own a 7dmkii paired with a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8. I shoot mainly baseball and hockey. I am looking to purchase a 5dmarkiii and a Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 sport lens. I would appreciate and feedback as to the quality of these products and what kind of results i should expect.
Thanks
Don

That Sigma will give you very close to the same FOV on the 5DIII as the 70-200mm does on your crop sensor 7DII. I use it on my Nikon D500 a lot and keep the 70-200mm F2.8 on my Nikon D750 at the same time when shooting indoor sports. That gives me an equivalent FOV from 70mm to 450mm all at F2.8. Its a great sports combo.

It is rediculously sharp and very fast focusing on all my bodies. I have had two of them over the last 7 years and cannot imagine shooting sports without it.

Except for the frames per second capabilities of the 7DII, the image quality of the 5DIII is superior. You'll lose the field of view advantage of the cropped sensor, but should have better images to crop from if you can't "get as close" as with the 7DII. Hopefully, you're shopping for a used 5DIII. They're now running in the $1500 to $1600 range, used. Don't pay full price for an older model ...

That would be because Canon HAS NO comparable product. No one besides Sigma makes any kind of 300mm F2.8 zoom lens, they are the one and only in this, as well as many other focal length lenses.

That he would have a better image to crop from is not necessarily true. I put it to the test a while back. I wanted to see which of my cameras would give me better "crop-ability" when shooting BIF and wildlife, my 7DII with 20mp or my 5DIV with 30mp. I mounted my 100-400 and 1.4 extender on my tripod, and then, using first one camera and then the other, and identical settings, I took the same shot with each at 560mm. When I cropped the 5DIV shot to match the area covered by the 7DII the result was easily noticeable. Even with the 5DIV having 50% more pixels, the smaller sensor of the 7DII resulted in higher pixel density when cropping. It produced a noticeably superior image compared to the 5DIV. In good light, for sports or wildlife, the 5DIV can't match the IQ of the 7DII when cropping, not to mention frame rate. For indoor sports under artificial lighting I do prefer the 5DIV for it's better high ISO performance. The 5DIII would also have the advantage there, although it doesn't have anti-flicker capability as the 7DII and 5DIV do.
The 5DIII is a great camera that is still very current and does many things very well, but the OP is going to have a hard time getting the results with it for sports and wildlife that he can with the 7DII. Just the same, I can't fault the OP for wanting to try full frame. It does have some distinct advantages. Plus, having 2 cameras can be a plus. I will often carry my 7DII with the 100-400 and my 5DIV with my 70-200. They complement each other very well. I doubt he would regret getting the 5DIII.

Not a big fan of used equipment shop mostly BH. Unless you can recommend a reliable used dealer. 200mm on a crop such as the 7d is equal to 300mm FL correct? So will i be gaining any distance and quality advantage with the sigma 300mm. I am wheelchair restriced so that limits my closer positioning sometimes

B&H, as well as Adorama, KEH, and several others, including MTShooter, are reliable used dealers.
200mm is 200mm, regardless of the camera it is on. What changes is field of view. For BIF, wildlife, and sports, that often provides an advantage over a full frame. Less cropping is required, and when you do crop the results are likely to be superior.

Don, the majority of my equipment is used. The 5DIII shutter is rated to 150,000 so one at even as high at 50k has a lot of useful life (and should have a lower price accounting for that usage). A 5DIII was sold here recently for just over $1600. Have a look at KEH where they have a return policy although not a 1-year warranty like a new Canon camera. At the product age, I don't think you'd find a refurbished model. One other option is the used-item page at Birds as Art (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/used-photography-gear-for-sale/). I don't see an 5DIIIs there today and you'd have to watch everyday as items here are priced to sell and they sell fast. I wouldn't buy a used camera without knowing the shutter count and having some level of return policy. KEH is 2-weeks, no questions asked.

The Canon crop factor is 1.6, so 200mm is 200mm x 1.6 = 320mm.

Regarding the 120-300mm lens. This is a very good lens I have used it on both the Mark III and the 7D MkII. The one drawback to this lens is the "weight", it is a monster even on a monopod. I would suggest you rent this lens to try it out before you purchase. The shots you get will be great but rent it first. Happy shooting.

I have both the 7Dll and the 5Dlll and the Sigma 120-300 2.8 Version 2. There are 3 versions to this lens. Version 1 not so good, Version 2 is just as good as version 3. The difference is in the price. Version 2 I bought for $1400 2 years ago, Version 3 sells for $3500 new. I use the lens for baseball. barrel racing indoors, horse racing (trotters), wildlife. For wildlife, birds, baseball I use it on a gimbal, for barrel racing I use my 7Dll hand held with this lens. Also can use a 1.4 and 2X converter with this lens.

Do you suggest i use the sigma 300mm 2.8 sport on my 7d for baseball and hockey to get the extra length since the crop vs full frame. Is it advantageous to buy the 5d will it improve my picture quality.
