Yes. There is no all-in-one lens that will work for everything. Zoom lenses that have a wide focal range have to compromise in areas. Different lenses have different optical designs for different purposes. Normal lens design is different than wide angle lens design and vastly different than telephoto lens design.

So, by that definition, Dark .. these new lenses that try to do it all, are a complete waste of time, eh?

That is completely dependent upon a persons desired images.

Sure. If your subject is smaller than your sensor, 1:1 is not enough - you have to go greater.

Yup!

But - hardly everyday stuff ...

I suspect, though ... very few are willing to radically compromise their images ...

It starts where the others stop, when it comes to close ups.

“Everyday stuff” for who, you? There are many of us, myself included, for whom macro- and micro-photography are pretty much everyday “stuff.”

Isn't 1:1 enough for most types of macro-photography?

Macro-work is everyday stuff for me, too, RWR ...

But, I am quite happy with 1:1 ...

Although it would be wonderful to be able to produce MORE than that ....

The limitations of the equipment I use, prevent this, to a large extent.

Thus, I deal the best I can, with what I have, available.

No, we don't need them for everyday shooting. They aren't made for everyday shooting. They are special purpose lenses made for people who do need them for what they consider everyday work.

Exactly!!!!

But one guy responded - his daily work IS like that ...

You can please some, sometimes, but you can't please all - all of the time ....

You really don’t need much to go beyond 1:1. Check out the links in the True Macro-Photography Forum: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html
