Tried to get the effect of a sun rise on our Memorial. Is there a filter that would have helped? Camera is a Canon T1i w/Sigma 18 X 200
A circular polarizer or neutral graduated density filter might help with the glare, but isn't that the effect you were after? You must have seen it in the viewfinder. If so then leave it. If not a post processing program might be able to reduce it.
Thanks for the hints on the filter choices. I had taken about 30 images at sunrise and was packing up my gear when I saw the reflection. Picture is poorly composed but I wanted to get the reflection and wished I had a filter to take another for compairson.
Your assumptions is correct I did see it in the view finder and wasn't sure what the end results would look like. I bought the camera about a year ago and I'm still on the learning curve.

Digital allows you to be creative. Its great you shot the one you did, but you could always move around shooting a few more at different angles. Different is good - keep shooting.
Circular polarizing filter would have helped with the glare and flares. Maybe also helped with enhancing the color a little.

I have taken several hundred of our Memorial from, as you have suggested, many different angles and heights. Next I want to get some shots from a chopper. I think a nice aeral view of the Memorial grounds would be great.
This forum is outstanding. The adivse flowing from here is really helpful to us fnugies!

That is a pretty nice shot. If you could catch it at the right time for the Sun to be in the center of the Memorial. I put the loupe on it and can read the names. Very sharp!

Thanks Erv for your comments. In order to center the sunrise I will have to take the picture earlier in the year or in the fall when the sun is lower and more of a southern exposure. Too far north late in the spring.

I usually don't update peoples images but the big problem was your blacks were not clearly defined. You can use as levels adjustment layer to correct the color. I have been working on color correction almost exclusively in PS for the last 6 months. Taken about 9 courses. I am only posting this because its in the analysis section. I respect peoples images but this was the best way to show you a correction without changing the exposure.
Its a little less washed out in the greens(darks) but overall exposure of the highlights were not changed,
Let me know if you think this is better or worse.

Thanks Russ. Image was taken at sunrise so the greens were somewhat muted anyways. Nice correction without effecting the highlights. I too have been working with PS Creative Suites for a few years. I had set this aside for future post editing but never got around to it. Again, thanks!

I'm not sure that a polarizing filter would reduce the glare that much. To my eye the color just looks off for a sunrise shot. I'd warm it up with a layer filter. Then go in with post processing and work on fixing the blown out areas. I'll show my effort if you give permission.
I think the shot will work the best with the sun at the top point of the memorial with rays flowing down each side. That's just me and if that's the shot you'd like then you will need to wait until the sun is in the proper position as you've stated. That may be a small window but if the memorial is close by next season be ready when the sun is and you'll have a great photo of you're memorial.........

Thank you. A bit too red/orangish for me but I see what you were trying to do with a sunrise picture to give it a morning glow. Nicely done. Thanks
