Nikon 18-200 vs Tamron 18-400

Thinking of selling my Nikon 18-200mm lens and buying the Tamron 18-400mm.
Anyone used both? What's your thoughts?

Had the 18-200, sold it for a profit. Don't have the 18-400 but have done extensive research, or as extensive as could be done on such a new lens, and am definitely going to get one as a general purpose walkabout lens for my Nikon's. I'd have one now but I needed the money I had budgeted for a new lens to get my Canon 28-300L repaired so, back to saving. Maybe Tamron will run a promotional sale around the holidays. Oh I so do hope so...

I have both. Since I got the Tamron, I haven't used the 18-200. I like the Tamron's reach. The Nikon may be slightly sharper, but can't get the long shots like the Tamron.

In my experience Tamron is as sturdy as the Nikon. I had a Tamron 28-300 and the base mount broke apart but my Nikon 18-300 has stood to quite a bit of abuse and still does well but both have good glass.

I have the Nikon 18-200 and am looking at the Tamron 18-400 as a general purpose lens. I was in Reno a couple weeks ago at the American Legion National Convention and wish I would have had the reach of the Tamron. What I've read on it so far seems to be pretty positive though I agree the Nikon is probably a bit more sturdy. Right now with the Tamron being new and not so readily available, I'm waiting in part until the prices settle down to a more affordable level.

The 18-200mm has a good reputation, and the new Tamron will give you double the reach. Below is what they have sold for recently on ebay.

I had a Tamron 18-270. It had problems vignetting and kept getting a woody lhad to lock it. My 18-200 nikon does not move and I have not noticed vognetting. But from what I've read the Tamron 100-400 I better made then the older 18-270.

I'm leary of aftermarket brands. In general, I have more faith in Sigma than Tamron. (Again, I am a raw ameteur) What I've read so far on the Tamron is positive. The one thing that cannot be evaluated at this time is the longevity of the lens; it's simply too new. The pics tend to be sharper in the mid 3/4 aperture ranges, otherwise pretty sharp. The auto focus seems to be rated high. They say it's fast and quiet It is versatile with an acceptable element of quality which is what I'm mostly looking for. The one thing I did notice. On most zoom lenses, there's usually one tube sliding in and out of another to achieve its range. The Tamron has two tubes sliding in and out of the base tube for a total of three. How consistently accurate it functions along with how this configuration holds up over time are the main questions that I have. I more than likely will find out because until I find a reason not to get it over the next couple of months, I more than likely will take the plunge.

Same here. I had a Tamron 18-270 years ago. I gave it to my son because of too much vignetteing at the telephoto and the wide end. Bought the Nikon 18-200 used. Kind of my take to Disney World lens.

I went with the Tamron 16-300mm for my D7200 as a walk around. a little wider and usually long enough for my needs. not bad for it's price.

Took the plunge. I now have a Tamron 18-400 loaded onto my D7500. My first impressions are very positive. Here's more about it (includes a couple quick shots to show the range):

Sold my tamron 18-270 in favor of the 18-400. Can't wait for the big brown truck to come.
