Nikon D7500 and Tamron 18-400 Setup

I've had the D7500 for a few weeks now. Took it to Alaska and got some nice shots. A couple weeks ago I was at the American Legion National Convention. The President paid us a visit to sign a Veterans benefits bill at the convention. I was shooting with my Nikon 18-200. I got in fairly close, but wished I had some more reach for what I was doing. After I got home I started researching the Tamron and after reading quite a few articles and evaluations, I decided to go for it. So for at the very least next couple of years, I'll be doing most (not all) my shooting the the D7500/18-400 setup. I really like the D7500 as it seems to do what I want it to do.

My first impression of the Tamron. This thing has a hella range to it. I really like how it's setup. Its appearance is clean looking. The lens lock, VC on and off, and AF/Man switches are conveniently located (more so than the Nikon setup IMHO). The AF seems to work almost stupid fast, at least quite faster than my Nikkor lenses. I'll have to do some playing around with the D7500's AF system to see how it adapts to it. The zoom is somewhat stiffer than my other lenses which will take a little getting used to. The up side is that lens creep will be virtually eliminated unless things loosen up along the way. I was a little leary of the fact it uses what appears to be four tubes to accommodate the range while remaining more compact than a more traditional zoom to 400 lens. It left me wondering about its longevity. Only time will tell... In the mean time, I think this thing is going to work out quite nicely for my needs.

What I've written here is from an amateur's perspective, but so far I'm really pleased with what I'm experiencing with the setup... Below are just a couple of quick sample shots (18mm and 400mm) that I took out in front of my home to give you a quick idea of the range of this lens with a DX format:

Wow, thanks for sharing.

What did you do with your Nikon 18-200? I traded mine in to Adarama towards the purchase of the Tamron 18-400. Can't wait to receive it. Unfortunately it is on backorder for a week or two.

This is my walk around lens. We live in central Florida and go to Sea World a lot. I'll enjoy the reach. At theme parks there are lots of interesting street images you can take along with shots of animals and the buildings.

I purchased the D500 which was a purchase after owning a D40-D5100/D7200. I also used an 80-400 with the D500 on a trip to South Africa visiting the Kruger Park. That was a great lens but purchased the Nikon 200-500 instead of the 80-400 and love that lens.

My next lens purchas might be the Tokina 100mm. I have the 35mm Nikon and the Kit Lens 18-55 but hardly use the 18-56 lens. 35mm 1.8 is great for indoor and night shots.

Keep me in the loop regarding your Tamron 18-400 use.

I think this will be my next purchase. Seems like a sensible alternative to Sony's overpriced RX10iii

Impressive! I have a Nikon 18-300 which I really like but was Googling the Tamron 18-400 just yesterday - it's such a new lens that I wasn't able to find much in the way of reviews. I've never bought a third party lens but am tempted with this one!

That's some magnification for certain. I own the DX version 70-300mm. I always felt content with that range. That 18-400mm is impressive. For a $649 lens, that's hard to beat. Enjoy it.

Which is the 18 and which is the 400. Also check the original box before posting. These look good and I'm interested in buying this lens also. Maybe you could repost....Rich

I purchased the Tamron 18x400 for my D500. I really haven't had the opportunity to fully test it out yet. I'm hoping to go boating this weekend and if I do, I should have plenty of opportunities to test out the lens. I bought it because it was the only 400mm that was not too heavy for me to use. Would love the longer lenses, but they are just too heavy. This combination is plenty heavy as it is.

Better hurry up and post some pictures before it gets too cold. Winter there bites like A rabid Doberman Pinscher

My backup camera is my D5100. I'm putting the Nikkor 18-200 on that camera. I use that one for family, goof off shots, or if when I'm shooting in an environment that could be a problem for the safety of the camera. I have a Sigma 150-500. Next I'm going to compare the reach and photo quality between the two, but I have a hnch I might be selling the sigma since it's so bulky to toke around and is slower than the Tamron. Unles I get into some more specialized stuff, this might be the 98% lens for me. I'll be doing some experimenting this weekend and will post more on this thread on Monday.

I like my 18-400, Have no issues with it! Nor did I have trouble with the 16-300.
