I am a newbie on this site and am hoping that someone out there has some information to pass along about Tamron's new 18-400mm lens. I am a Canon shooter with a 7D Mark ll and a 6D. I have the Tamron 150-600mm G2 which I have used on an African Safari in Tanzania with good results. If any one has info on this new lens from Tamron I would be grateful.

If you already have the 150-600 g why add the 18-400? Is ti to replace the 150-600?

One reason might be the 18-400 is easier to carry around than the 150-600 (shorter physically) as a "walkaround" lens. Also covers the wide end which the 150-600 does not. They should complement each other even though there is overlap.

The Tamron G2 is a good lens and I am not looking to replace it. I want something lighter that gives me more flexibility at the low end.

I also have the Tamron 150-600 G2 and recently purchased the Tamron 18-400 as my walk around lens to replace my Tamron 18-270. The 150-600 is just too big and heavy to carry. It is best used for planned shoots and with a tripod. I'm satisfied with the 18-400 and think it's at least as good as the 18-270. The 18-270 used to stay on my camera 95% of the time and now I suspect the 18-400 will be on my camera most of the time . . .

Thanks for the reply. Like I said I will keep the G2 as I use it on a tripod. I use the Canon 18-200mm kit lens a lot and have good success with that. I am hoping that the 18-400 will be a good walk around lens.

Actually I am thinking getting those two lenses as well. I love Tamron lenses well made and reasonably priced with long warranties. I agree the 150-600 is great for birds, wildlife, etc. (special planned genres), while the 18-400 would make a great GP or spontaneous walkround lens 90-95% of the time. I already own the Tamron 90mm SP macro 2.8 love it so far.

Having thought about it. It is compatible with the TAP-in so it is flexible (do you already have the TAP-in for your 150-600?) If you throw a 1.4 in your bag, you would have plenty of reach for the days you do not want to carry both lenses. I have only seen a couple reviews. Dustin Abbot has one at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7Xc0tMQ5Tc

My concern would be focus speed for action shots/BIF. But you have your 150-600 for that.

I just purchased the 18-400 for my 7DMKii a couple of weeks ago. While I have not shot a whole lot with it yet, what I have shot has been very satisfying. I too got it as a trade-up from the 18-270 that I absolutely loved. I suspect that I will love the 18-400 equally after I get more time with it. It is a much better built lens than the 18-270 and while it includes a lens lock to prevent lens creep when not in use, at this point I don't need it as the lens is very tight and does not creep at all. Good luck and if you are still undecided, then go grab one at your local camera shop and try it out before you buy it. Like me, you will probably be sold in no time.

Its a great little lens for general carry-around photography. Pretty sharp overall, but can be really sharp with a little fine tuning. GREAT range and relatively light to carry.

I have a Think Tank Airport Security bag for my gear. Have been to Africa a couple of times with this bag. Two bodies, and three other lens including the Tamron G2. So far have not had problems getting it on as a carry on.
