I have owned two FX bodies and would not recommend the 28-300. I had one for a short time and was not impressed. The D810 and D850 demand the best pro quality glass. With the 28-300 you will have overlap when you realize that you need fixed aperture f/2.8 lenses to get the best IQ. Eventually you'll get a 24-70 and a 70-200 and wonder why you bought a sub-par 28-300. And please know that the D850 can shoot in DX mode at 20mp which will give your 70-200 an effective max focal length of 300mm. If you do buy a 28-300, buy it used so you don't too beat up when you upgrade.

You will have plenty of time to order the D850. On the Nikon USA web site the original manufacturing run is apparently sold out. Listed as "Out of Stock".

Good choice. I would start with the 24-70 f/2.8 and then add the 70-200 f/2.8 FL. I have the D850 on order and hoping to hear about shipping any day. Good luck.

35mm 1.8g prime, 50mm 1.8g prime, might serve well as early choices, also be sure to get a good Speedlight Flash unit.

I agree, the 24-70, 2.8 is the first. Then I'd recommend the 70-200, 2.8 and the 14-24, 2.8 to complete the "holy trinity". A 50, 1.4 is a nice addition here too.

I love my 28-300mm on my D7000. I question it on the D850. See Thom Hogan's list for the best Nikon lenses for the D850. Thom Hogan is, perhaps, the best reviewer of equipment there is. Our own Steve Perry is right up there, too. Note: While the 28-300mm was not on Nikon's list for the D800, I have used the two together with acceptable results. The question is, did the lens make the best of the camera?

I traded my Nikkor 28-300 for the new Tamron 24-70 VC G2 (for my D750). No regrets so far. The build quality of the Tamron 24-70 is so much better than the Nikkor 28-300. I could get easily talked into the Tamron 70-200. A friend of mine just bought one. Like the Tamron 24-70 it is built like a tank.

Consider 35mm or 50mm 1.4 or 1.8. Both are Prime Lens.

Yes, primes are excellent. I have my dad's Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 that he bought for his Nikon F back in 1960. I am thinking about having it modified to fit my Nikon D750.
It won't have auto focus or auto f/stop but that won't bother me. It has excellent optical qualities - even for a lens this old.
