I am beginning to look at maybe starting my own portrait photography business. Although this is still a ways down the road i am interested in knowing what types of professionals i need to have at my disposal as a new business. I figure i will need an attorney for writing contracts but what else would i need one for and i am sure at some point i will need an accountant. What other professional services might i need. Any help in this area would be very helpful.

Insurance, attorney, tax / accounting. As far as costs (not people) here's a link:

Snowbear's link is excellent. You may not need all of those things, but probably more than you thought. Every year when I pull up the expense data for my taxes, I am amazed at how much is spent on "stuff." Supplies, mailing, insurance, tax prep, etc.

thanks for the information Snowbear and CaptainC. Do you use anything like makeup artist's hair dressers things of this nature? Are these type of people something i should be able to get if necessary? I am just trying to get a list of people that i may need at some point.

I do use a makeup artist occasionally, but I have my client pay them directly. That way I am out of the whole employee thing with her. I recommend her to the client and they pay her. The last thing I want is to deal with all the tax implications of an employee for the few times a year I use her.

I'm, not a pro, but I use another forum that has quite a few - that's how I knew about that link.

I guess the makeup thing comes down to whether you're shooting family-type portraits or if you are doing models.
