Maybe I'm missing something, but I was wondering why the big Internet stores like Walmart, Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, and all the rest that like us to order from them don't give a percentage of what they make from the Internet to improve the Internet ie: access and speed? Maybe they could start a Go Fund Me page just for them to pay into. And that way support Us/We that buy from them using the Net.

They give plenty, believe me.
Obama /FCC added a taxes/fees.surcgarges so all people can get fee access)
It's all types of these (Federal Access Chace, Universal access charge, ...) hurting American business.
Yes I agree that some burden should be companies, but there are limits,
Tim

You're wondering why big companies don't give away money that isn't tax deductible?

Sure , let's burden companies even more . Bring on more regulation . Let's regulate more and more until we drive a few more million jobs out of here . In NJ , a heavily Democratic state , there are so many rules and regulations on business , they have driven out an incredible amount of jobs . And the property taxes , because of the lost industry etc . , shifts to the homeowner . The lawyers dont care . But mention deregulation , and the whole rotten bunch cry like babies .
And tomorrow I'm going to enjoy the solar eclipse .😃 Wear your glasses everyone !

Curious... to whom would they send their contribution?

Media such as newspapers, magazibes, TV, and radio charge advertising fees, so this notion has some merit. But the Internet is not an 'owned media,' so the issue is far more complicated. Recently Internet neutrality has become controversial. Remember that between you and every poster there are, at minmum, two ISPs and if you look into the long headers of those messages you will see the time stamps of every server the message has passed through. Potentially, both ISPs and every server could charge a fee depending on how future legislation plays out. And such could have International variences.

The OP suggested a voluntary contribution from companies - big companies. Companies that measure income and profit in the billions of dollars may be "driven" out of one state into another if the other offers tax incentives - at the the expense of the taxpayers.

As for regulations, they're for our protection! Even with all those "rules and regulations on business," workers and the public are still pretty much at the mercy of businesses.

I haven't any faith that the money would be used for the intended purpose.

I do not see how it is a taxpayer expense when jobs are created and the revenue from those new jobs exceeds the cost of the incentives. Of course, being a victim of New York taxes, that scenario would sorely fail.
