This has been my experience as well.

I frequently send images from Lightroom to Photoshop. Normally when I save from Photoshop, the images return to Lightroom. Recently they do not return.
1. Is there any explanation for this?
2. How can I make Photoshop send altered images back to Lightroom.
I would much appreciate any help that Hogs in the know might offer. Thanks in advance

Two part answer:
1. When closing out of PS you need to just File->Save and the resulting TIFF or PSD should go to LR with a name modified as you have set up in Preferences.
2. If you File->Save As, then the file will be saved in the same folder as the original but will still need to be added to the Library (Import with "Add" selected).

Why does "save as" get you in trouble? I use it because I want the edited image to be saved in .tiff format, not going back to LR as an NEF file. Then I can either re-set the original or remove the virtual copy!

Save as doesn't always go back to LR directly for me. You can set LR preferences to save as TIFF or PSD. Also you can set a preference to label image as edited in photoshop

First, Save If is sticky and can load the image in a different folder, usually the last one used.

Whenever I use Save As, it brings up the dialogue in which I can select whatever folder I want to put it into. I think it will load into a different folder only if you forget to select the one you want.

PS does not write RAW files (that is what a NEF is). PS saves in jpg, tiff, psd, and others but never a NEF file.

I stand corrected! It will return them to LR as .tiff for me, because that is what I use. Because of the way I have things set up, I do not want the edited version going back into the same folder as the original, so Save As is the most efficient way to put it where I want it. There are different options, and as long as one gets the desired result, that is what matters.

The end result is the only thing that matters. Not how you get there

I have no problems when I send a image from LR to PS for further PP.
However, I do have an issue when I send it to a 3rd party program, Portrait Pro, it sends it to the LR Folder in Pictures (Mac).

If there is someone out there that knows of a fix for that (3rd Party) or that there is no other way it is done, please let me know.
BTW, I wrote to portrait Pro 2 weeks ago and still have not heard back, lots of complaints about their support program.

Thanks,

Greg

Do you have the program installed as a plug-in to LR? I don't know the program you mentioned, but whenever I use external software for editing, I open it from within LR to send pictures over. That way they work well together.

Yes, it is quite easy to send it to PS from LR
I added the plug in as directed and to transfer I use Photo > Edit in > PortraitProStudio

Perhaps there is a right click or something I need to do to bring it back to LR instead of the Hard Drive folder.
BTW, I use Folders for my storage in LR, very few Collections.
I am retired and only have about 2500 images, it is mostly family and vacations.

I only use Collections for temporary purposes, such as a group of images from different folders that I want to print or order from a photo lab.

Since I don't know the program, I cannot suggest anything about how to bring it back to LR, but usually when you save an image to the HD folder it also shows up in LR.
How are you saving the image when in Portrait Pro?

The main external editor I use is Photomatix Pro, and for some reason I have to access that through File>Export with Preset>PhotomatixPro. Within the program there is a checkbox that I have to check that tells the program to automatically send the final image back to LR. Perhaps you should look and see if the PortraitPro program has something like that.

If nothing else works, you will have to import the edited picture into LR once it is saved to your hard drive folder.
