Take a look at the Pro Trekker 450 AW, the 650 may be too large for a carry on. I use this pack for mountain trail day hikes. There is enough room for my camera gear and hiking gear. I sometimes go in up to 7 miles and I am safety conscious, so I always include the ten essentials, first aid kit, extra shirt, light shell windbreaker, extra water, extra food etc. I tried to replace the Pro Trekker with the ProTactic 450, but the ProTactic is VERY firm, too stiff. The main compartment lid was not flexible. I couldn't zip it closed with the gear I needed. I returned it and got the ProTactic 350 for use when not in the mountains. I recommend these LowePro products highly. If you can, try before you buy.

The problem is that without any local camera stores anymore, trying before you buy is a thing if the past. :-/

Hello my Photo friends!

HELP!!!!

As always, I'm reaching out to you for your expertise. I'm going on an extensive Canadian Rockies photography outing and really need to find an appropriate backpack for my trip.

My leader is carrying the f-stop Santori EXP, but they are not making that anymore and I have not found it on the Internet anywhere.

I need to have easy access to camera equipment. Here's what I need to carry with it::

2 camera bodies
Stable tripod
3 to 4 lenses
Three filters and holders
5 batteries
Small jackets/light amount of clothing
Up to 2 L of water/bladder
Snacks
Backpack rain cover

It needs to be Airline carry-on size since we are being airdropped by helicopter into remote locations.

It also needs to be lightweight!

HELP!!!

Thank you!

Lots of good suggestions. I often learn about new photography products on the "Hog, and this is one of those times. I looked into the F-stop bags. One of those seems to be the best option for what you want to do, especially since one of the leaders uses one. Bear in mind that he/she does this for a living and you may not need the pro-grade bag that they have. However, considering the several thousands of dollars of gear you'll be carrying, spending $400-$500 on a bag doesn't seem too extreme.

If you know of anyone else who has done these types of trips before, then ask them about what they bring. MT Shooter is a guy who may know more about this, since he lives in Montana and runs a camera store, Camera Cottage. I'd PM him and see what he might suggest.

I'm looking seriously at the F-Stop Ajna or Tilopa. What do you think?

I think either would be a great backpack for what you are doing! I really like the Tilopa because it has the room you need for your gear and it has room for your hiking essentials you will need to take with you. I really dislike camera bags/packs that only have room for the camera and no personal gear. I doubt you would go wrong with either, but I would prefer the Tilopa.

I like the ThinkTank Airport Essentials myself, but that may not hold everything you've listed. I don't envy your back with everything you want to tote along.

Anyway, ThinkTank has a number of airline-friendly packs.

Thank you for your thoughts. I don't envy my back either!!!

So, I want to thank you all for such magnificent responses to my question.

I've come to a decision! … (Drumroll please!)

I've ordered the F-Stop Tilopa!!! A rain cover and a large ICU.

I have a couple questions::

Do you use the gatekeeper straps and what are they for?

Do you use the f-stop hydration sleeve in your backpack? Is it waterproof?

What other little nuance items (non-fstop) have you added to your f-stop?

Thank you for your continued response! You guys are the greatest!!!

I use the F Stop mountain bag Ajna with a large slop ICU (internal camera unit). This light weight extremely tough bag will fit all your camera gear, extra clothing and filters. Also, this bag will last you for years of hiking and your photography.
