For D7100, Nikkor AF-S 16-80 1:2.8-4E ED VR. This is what is on my D7200 most often. It is fast, sharp and has excellent VR. Hands down, the best DX kit lens Nikon makes.

Not surprising.

I absolutely love my 18-140. Not too conspicuous and pretty lightweight.

My favorite walking around lens is the Nikon 24-120.

Since you're talking "walking aroung" and not "all-around" lens....I'd have to agree with David. Why? For a basic walkabout you really aren't going to need an ultra-wide focal length. As it is, the 24-120 gives you the equivalent fov of 36mm, which will give you a normal wide-angle view. Even 300mm won't give you decent bird photos, so you don't need the ultra zoom. What else would you zoom on? On the D7100, the 24-120 would give a fov of 36-180. I have a 24-70 on my D800 and it pretty much stays there and I don't miss the extra reach that much. On our trip to Taos I never took it off the camera.

That's on a D750, on my D7100 I use a 35 1.8 DX.

Nothing wrong with that. You end up having to compose with your feet...so I guess it's a really GOOD walkaround lens. Back in the day, the 55mm was the normal lens that everybody shot with. This, basically, is the equivalent on a dx camera.

OK, I'll rephrase my question: in your experience, at what point {3x, 5x, 10x, etc} do those design compromises become bothersome, something to be avoided??

I know that you were addressing someone else's post but I think I have an answer. It used to be a 3x zoom range was considered to be the limit before engineers had to compromise in the design. With computer aided design, they're pushing it to about 5x.

There is no such lens as a walk around lens. Spend time playing zoom.

Looking for a decent walk around lens for my Nikon D7100. I would like your opinion on the following lens:
Nikon 18-300mm
Sigma 18-300mm DC Macro OS HSM
Tamron 16-300mm VC PZD

Thank you

The 18-200mm used to be the walkaround DX lens, but now the 18-300mm might be a better choice. Below are a lot of links to compare lenses.

I have a Nikon 18-200 that I use all the time on my D3200. Hoping to upgrade to the Nikon D7200.
The lens has been perfect for me as I shoot at all of the ranges. For long shots I generally have something steady to fit the camera too.

I have used the Tamron 16 - 300 as my everyday lens for a year now takes great shots ,it does go a little soft at 300 but for versatility it covers the various situations I encounter, if I'm going to be out for nature ,birds and such I preferr the Canon 100 - 400 L for walking about when image quality really matters

My walk around lens is Tamron 16 to 300 mm it's jack of all trades's and works well it ain't the best glass on the planet but it covers a lot of photo situations that you would have to carry a lot of different lenses I use it when I'm flying out of town or plan on being off continent and have to travel light it works will in most situation yes there's better glass and yes it may be the shotgun affect but it is the lens that I carry when I don't know what I'm going to photograph
