That's partially my fault ... I usually just make them up as I go. The important thing is to sound convincing.

Parody on Statistics

Doctors

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is
700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians
per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171

Now think about this:

Guns

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is
80,000,000.
(Yes, that's 80 million)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths
per year, all age groups, is , 1500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner
is .0000188

Statistics courtesy of FBI

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, statistically, doctors are approximately
9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN,

BUT Almost everyone has at least one doctor.
This means you are over 9,000 times more likely to be killed by a

doctor as by a gun owner!!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, We withheld the statistics on

I would never argue that point with you. And after doing a quick look for statistics about "will a gun in the household increase the likelihood of a gun related incident within that household" it seems that claims fly to support both sides of that argument, so it's really hard to tell.

I'll just say that it's my personal decision not to have a gun in our household.

I think I heard a statistic like this about automobile accidents too. But I think car accidents would probably be an even larger percentage of deaths per driver than deaths by doctor or gun or smoking for that matter.

Uhhh, hate to spoil the fun (and I agree, there's some fun in playing with and interpreting these numbers), but what happens if you change the gun statistics to include all deaths by guns, or at least, those not caused in the course of enforcing the law?

I used to pass a book in the college library entitled "How to Lie WIth Statistics."After a couple of years, I couldn't stand it any more and I finally read it, and, of course, depending on your sampling methods, you can achieve all kinds of interesting results.

Don't get me started on business graphics.

I posted this in fun... just had a major physical and the dr. left no stone unturned or crevice un-poked. After stress test, Xrays, blood work, liver scan and fitness profile. It turns out the only thing that's not broken is me willy and at 70 it's retired!

You have to love statistics! As a math major I developed a deep and long lasting distaste of the subject through the coursework I had in college. A lot of that had to do with my first professor of statistics who was a dead ringer for Colombo but, that is another story.

My feelings about statistics are quite eloquently summed up in the following story:

A mathematician, a computer scientist, and a statistician were all asked the question, “What is 2 + 2?”

The mathematician replied, “4”.

The computer scientist replied, “Using integer data type 2 + 2 = 4. Using floating point data type, a number closely approximating 2 is added to another number closely approximating 2 and the answer is a number closely approximating 4.”

The statistician replied, “What do you want it to be?”

The damm Doctors bury their mistakes. Ive never had a gun owner even hurt me. The people that kill with guns arent gun owners they most likely stole it. If somebody breakes into my home he's a dead man. A neibor police offcer of mine told me to make sure he's inside before you shoot him. And make sure he's dead so some bleeding heart lawer dont try to sue. Up hear in the country most everyone is armed. And I have never heard of an accental shooting in out neck of the woods.

PLEASE, PLEASE be very careful with the theory of "make sure he's inside before you shoot him"!!! Let me qualify my statement. I am not from Pa but a retired LEO from Ca and taught use of force in the police academy and at 3 different colleges. The law is really clear that you as a citizen can use deadly force when your life or someone elses life is in IMMEDIATE DANGER. That may or may not be true just because someone has broken into your home. You are awakened at night by a noise inside your home and respond, armed, to the source and confront a male subject in your home that you do not know. You point your gun at him and yell freeze or don't move and the subject complies, even gets into a prone position and surrenders. Your life in not in immediate danger and you would not be justified in using deadly force.
Conversely if the noise is say in your rear yard, outside the house and you confront the subject and he produces a weapon and points it at you, Your life IS IN immediate danger and you would be justified in using deadly force.

It disturbs me when LEO's make blanket statements like "make sure he's inside the house when you shoot him" because it misleads people that may have no training and place them in a very dangerous situation if they depend on that statement.

I handled a case many years ago wherein a man was awakened at 3 am by the sound of breaking glass. He responded with a handgun and confronted a man in his living room in the dark. He was frightened and had been told the same theory, make sure he is in the house. He fired twice killing the intruder. The intruder turned out to be his next door neighbor who was very intoxicated and had returned home from the bars and got the wrong house!

I'm just saying, please be very careful accepting blanket statements, even from LEO's, about something as important as this. The man from the above story never recovered mentally from that night.
'Nuff said, I'll get off my soapbox.
