My Canon 7D MKII is acting different.

Hi all. I have a question that I would like to get some opinions on. For the last two or three days I've notice my Canon 7d mkII has a delay in focusing when the shutter button is pushed down half way. I would say it takes about 2 seconds before it starts trying to focus. It eventually focuses correctly, but it never used to have this delay. I cleaned the contacts on the camera. It happens with different lenses being attached. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if maybe I need to send it in for cleaning and repair. Thanks for your ideas.

Sorry boomboom but you haven't offered enough information to solve your focus problem. Exactly how is your camera set? What lens are you using? What are the sky conditions? Day or night? What are you trying to shoot? What is it that you want to focus, what is the surface? When you start to dissect your situation you might come to something that is causing your trouble. You are going to be asked, you should be prepared to answer.

I have used this camera for over a year and it never had this delay in any condition. I'm using mainly the Canon 100-400 II. I also tried the 24-105 Canon. Same results. I was on Aperture setting at f5.6. The lighting was good. You know when you use a camera for a long period of time just like a car ,when something is wrong you notice it. It's almost like when pushing the shutter button down it's not recognizing the request to focus for a short period of time. I had a 40d and 50d that eventually wouldn't take a picture when pushing the shutter button. It appeared those were a shutter button problem. This camera isn't that old so I'm hoping it's not headed the same way.

My experience with the 100-400mm v.ii has given me similar problems but I understand why the camera is having trouble with auto-focus. My application calls for spot focus capturing an image at near minimum focus distance. Those parameters can give auto-focus some problems and I am aware of that. My questions was more of a suggestion that a similar problem may be causing your situation. AF involves several different operations and settings. Hopefully you can resolve the issue.

Thanks for your response. Once in a while I push that minimum focus distance also and get similar results as you. This problem seems to be no matter what distance. I was kind of thinking maybe the shutter button is dirty and is not relaying the request to the camera. Like I say, I've never really experienced this delay until just recently. I do appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. I love the camera and lens combo.

Any chance you have the autofocusing distance setting (on the lens) at the longer distance and you are closer than the minimum distance for that setting?

I don't know much about Canon cameras as I use a Nikon, and I don't know if this will help or not, but have you tried setting up your camera to use back button focusing to see if it would eliminate the problem.

Or, how much charge on the battery?

My first guess would be the auto focus distance setting, as mentioned above. Set it to 6.5m to infinity and see if that solves the problem.

I would suggest you have a camera body problem since it is doing it on multiple lenses. You could put it in BBF and see if it continues to do that. Otherwise I would first call and speak to a tech at Canon. They may be able to give you an idea if it is a setting you may have hit or if you do in fact have a problem. I think the warranty is one year.

Are you in one shot AF or Servo?

I believe you are correct he needs to turn on AF Servo, One Shot just focus just once. But he did say it's taking up to 2 seconds just to focus something else may be going on.

I'm thinking that if he's in Servo there are lots of settings that could possibly influence the speed of focus.
The 7DII's AF is highly customizable.

Don't know if this is relevant, but does it do the same thing using BB focus?

Shut the 1/2 press off and use BBF and see if the same thing happens. If not, maybe you have a shutter button problem. (I never liked the 1/2 press thing anyway). Another thought. Is it hunting or just not focusing at all? Are you photographing anything different, as in no contrast things. Try a different topic, if the same thing happens maybe there really is a focus problem. Give Canon a call and ask a tech if there is a fix. The techs are very helpful
