Why should I be discreet? I stay 15- 25ft from them. Don't use flash.

Following usual street photography practice is entirely appropriate.

Of course you can take photos of photographers! It can be fun... They sometimes look pretty silly.

"Commercial usage" isn't just advertising, by any means... It's use of a photo on T-shirts, posters, coffee table books, packaging, websites, lunch boxes, or just about anything else.... The key distinction that makes a usage "commercial" is that the image is being used in a manner that will generate income to the user.

Right. I worded that badly. That picture of the guy by the hydrant - is he waiting for a dog?

Honestly, I kind of wonder if they think you are "stealing" their shot. i.e. taking photos of their subject in the pose that they set up. It doesn't bother me in a place like a park, but I absolutely hate it when guests stay after the ceremony at a wedding and keep snapping my set ups.

They end up posting their one shot on Facebook getting credit for their amazing skill, before I get mine downloaded.

that's why it's in my contract with the brides and grooms that during the group pics "formals" , I work alone and no one else is permitted to take pics at that time.

I agree with Jim, but I still prefer to work behind the camera, not in front of mine or anyone else's.

There is probably the best answer. Most of us, on evaluation would be forced to conclude that we stand behind the camera because we really don't want to stand in front of it. The idea of a selfie to a photographer is anathema. This is probably the major difference between a photographer and a phone picture taker.
