Suggest you get some shots from outside to capture the contrast of everyday life going on while on the other side of the street freedom was lost.

We have an historic Gaol (the old spelling of jail) in our town. I like this piece of advice and will use it some day this summer when the gaol is open to the public.

I used to live in West Philly and in lower Bucks County, passed ESP often but never visited there. But don't miss Center City with the most historic square mile in America. Philly has the nation's first zoo. Franklin Court is interesting, as is the Italian Market at Eighth and Washington...and if you get there, try a true Philly Cheese Steak at Gino's or Pat's just a blobk south of the Market (my favorite is Pat's.) Enjoy my home city.

Italian Market is at NINTH and Washington. But otherwise excellent recommendations!

ESP is a fun place to enjoy taking photos in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. As many have already noted, be mindful of the lighting indoors -especially as you capture the inside of cells where very little light is available. Capone's cell is the outlier in that it does have lights inside the cell ... most other cells are lit by natural light coming in from tiny windows high on the cell walls. It is definitely a "photo-friendly" place. If you have the time, try to explore the immediate neighborhood around ESP as there are photo ops seemingly everywhere ... I've attached one pic I captured about a month ago, one block away from ESP. Enjoy your time there!

I had been there with my photo club, that was an amazing place for photography. Tripod is allowed and will be charged a fee. I did use flash with no objection. Every cell has different viewing interesting to the other. Take your time to make sure visiting every single corner and not miss any thing as much as possible. Have fun!

This is a very interest one, the "Barber's chair"

Wow! Amazing shot. Scary!

The area around ESP is on the upswing. The Museum is nearby. Lots a great new and old reliable restaurants within a couple blocks. If you want an incredible burger, the Belgian Cafe is a few blocks south.

I live close but have never been there, but remember its one of the most haunted places in the country so be sure to take a can of ghost away.
and if you stay in the area for a few days, check out John Heinz nature area, near the airport. Lots of birds and wildlife there,

Great place for photo's. Was there about 5-6 years ago with my camera club. Bring a lens to shoot in low light. The prisoners hardly ever saw anyone else and they put hood over the prisoners when they were moved from one place to another so they never would know where they were in the prison. I think it was the very first penitentiary. Different then a prison. Very interesting. You get headsets to explain the place as you walk around.
Enjoy.

I toured it years ago and could've shot myself for not bringing a camera, but I after I lived in Philly. We were there for a short visit and I had no camera with me. We ended up doing this as an outing for my kids. Harrowing place with a riveting history.

Make sure you either become a member or pay the extra $10 for the Tripod pass. Having a tripod helps, and as long as you do not block the passage way, I have never had a problem using a tripod in ESP.

I often will shoot a 15 to 20 second exposure to get great depth of field, and to have the people walking though "disappear" due to the long exposure.

You will have a great time, and you will capture some great images, ESP is just that photographically interesting.

Just pay to take a tour and take pictures while on the tour. Ask the docent about other points of interest while you are with the group.
