I will be photographing Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia in a few days. I'll be scouting out locations on a day before to determine where I want to spend my time on the actual shoot. But I know this group will have suggestions about best spots etc. Looking forward to sage advice. Thanks.

Don't get too close to the inmates.

I never served time there. So, I'd be of no help.

Is this a job that you've been hired to do? If not you can expect to be challenged by law enforcement, even if you are not doing anything illegal. I hope you are coordinating your shoot with the penitentiary.

Did this a few years back and it was fascinating! It's obviously unoccupied and is located in a residential area of Philly! Suggest you get some shots from outside to capture the contrast of everyday life going on while on the other side of the street freedom was lost. Also, the ballfield inside was so close to the street that allegedly convicts would communicate with those on the outside by throwing balls back and forth over the walls! Very interesting place with great ops...make sure you bring lens suitable for low light shooting...have fun!

I became a member of Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) (which is a museum of the formerly active prison). The staff is very photographer friendly.
Make sure you either become a member or pay the extra $10 for the Tripod pass. Having a tripod helps, and as long as you do not block the passage way, I have never had a problem using a tripod in ESP.

I often will shoot a 15 to 20 second exposure to get great depth of field, and to have the people walking though "disappear" due to the long exposure.

You will have a great time, and you will capture some great images, ESP is just that photographically interesting.

Thanks, I did become a member and arranged for a special hours shoot before the 10:00AM opening to the public. I am very excited-I used to live in Ardmore which is a mere 10 miles away and never went there! Now I live in Vermont and am visiting my daughter in Media. Go figure. Appreciate the advice. I am planning on using my tripod a lot.

One interesting (accidental) photo I captured.
I was using a 20 second exposure with a Tripod, and people were walking by. Most walk past fast enough, they do not show up. One group of people stopped for about 10 seconds and then continued.
When I looked at my photo later, it looked like I had ghosts in the photo. And at ESP, having ghosts in the photo enhances the photo.

I had been there with my photo club, that was an amazing place for photography. Tripod is allowed and will be charged a fee. I did use flash with no objection. Every cell has different viewing interesting to the other. Take your time to make sure visiting every single corner and not miss any thing as much as possible. Have fun!

This is a very interest one, the "Barber's chair"

I see you are a Fuji guy-I went from Canon to Fuji several years ago. Love the mirrorless system. Converted my XT1 to IR and love the XT2. Favorite lens is 18 to 135, but love the 10 to 24 as well. Only gripe is battery life. Have 11 batteries just in case. Used most of them on a cold day in April on Ellis Island.
