I shot this image this evening and it is over exposed. It also appears grainy. I would really appreciate your thoughts. Is it because of the ISO???

I was using a Canon T2i body with a Canon 70-300 L IS USM lens. Normally I don't have a problem like this with this combo.

A number of the images I shot appeare over exposed. The images when the ISO was at 500 or lower are fine.

My camera was set at shutter priority. ISO automatic.

Many thanks!!!!

Fran

I don't see any noise (grain) in the photo. It does appear to be very slightly overexposed, but nothing that probably can't be fixed in post. I think it is a very good shot, though I would probably crop or clone out the player along the left edge.

A slower ISO speed might have worked out better; perhaps ISO 400 or even 200.

I do not see any noise...unless you are talking about the trees in the background. ?? The blur in the trees is a good thing and occurs when using a shallow depth of field, which makes your pitcher stand out more. I like it...good shot! Did he win?

Hi Fran,
I dont see any great issue here, yes slightly over exposed but easily sorted. Your settings appear fine, F5 and 1/800sec, though I would normally shoot this sort of image Aperture priority to ensure a shallow depth of field to emphasise my subject. What I think you need to look at here is your light reading setting, centre weighted on your subject would ensure correct exposure here where you have a bright background and sun.I suspect you were on the evaluative setting.

I agree, dont auto the ISO !!

Out doors, dont use higher than 200.

Photo not too bad, can process the saturation, contrast,
with software.

hey Fran

I think what happened here is that you had the metering set at NORMAL. The camera saw the dark trees behind, then the light colored player and adjusted the exposure for somewhere in between.

You should try to use SPOT METERING so the camera only considers the player for its choice of Aperture and ISO.

The background will then be a bit dark.

I did darken and sharpen ( and cropped it to a 5x7 format) it a bit, hope you don't mind

I have one word - Histogram. I've discovered, very few photographers use the histogram. If we don't have the correct exposure, we really don't have a picture. The histogram tells you 99% of the time if the exposure is correct or not.

I played with it very quickly, and this is what I got. Hope you don't mind.

Thank you everyone. The changes look so much better.

Several of you mentioned metering. I never know which metering option to select so I leave it on evaluating. Will try spot metering next game.

I like te ISO lower outside; but I was finding I needed a slower shiutter speed in order for the camera meter to indicate the exposure was proper. Since it was a ball game and I was also catching the action I needed the higher shutter. Such a balancing act.

The boys won!!! This was the first game for their summer travel team. We are off to a good start!!!
