Depending on what you are shooting you may be extremely disappointed in what a TC will bring to the table. I purchased one to use on my f2.8 lenses to reach out a little further shooting youth soccer & was disappointed to say the least. After shooting a few games I placed it back in the box & haven't used it since. I get better quality by cropping or simply moving during the event to get in a better range of my object of focus. If I could give you any advice I would suggest you go with a 1.4 & stay away from the 2.0 because it's too much of a sacrifice. Best wishes.

Can you use a TC with a PC on a DX in AP, shooting in DS without an ND or a CP?

Best in FX or MFC, not MFT, but watch for CA and CF that you won't see in the EVF.

I have that lens and love it. I also have the 18 to 250 Sigma lens. Recently I upgraded my camera from the D5100 to the D5600 Wow what a difference. Yearly I take both lenses to Sigma USA headquarters in Ronkonkoma, New York to have the lens cleaned and any software updated. I had lost the 18 - 250 lens hood they replaced it free of charge. I actually purchased the 150 to 500mm lens there since it was a trade free zone there were no taxes. Back on topic. I asked the Technician that worked on me what teleconverter would work with the lens, his answer was there was not one that will work. Bummer! There was something about the lens arrangement where the lens would actually touch.
If you ever get a chance to be on Long Island and either need a lens or want your lens cleaned and checked look up the corporate headquarters you wont be disappointed.

I want to thank all you guys for your information. I've been doing some research, and it seems with this lens and camera I should just crop what I have with the lens. I guess that saves me some money for something else.

I can only tell you that the Nikon TC's will not mount to that lens.

Why would that be true? If it mounts to the camera shouldn't it mount to the TC?

I'll check mine with my D5300.

Here is some compatibility info on Kenko TC. My 28-300 and 200-500 do work with the 1.4 on my D5300. But VR makes the 200-500 rattle so I won't use it any more as they recommend in the table notes.

Note the table says it works with the D5100 but maybe not if the lens min aperture leads to a net f-stop over 5.6.

I tested my Sigma 150-500 with my Kenko Pro 1.4 TC on my D5300. It connects and works fine. Autofocus works. It even works with OS 1 on.

That doesn't ensure it would work the D5100 as they may have upgraded the autofocus on the D5300. You'd have to test it.

My new Kenko 1.4 is for sale. PM me if interested.

The tech is wrong relative to Kenko TCs.

AHA!!! (You're going to love this, Henryp.)

Henry is right, Sigma makes Nikon mount TC's but any TC on that lens will make it manual focus only.

Sigma did make the 150-500 several years before the 150-600. It is still available used from B & H as well as other fine retailers.

Wrong.

If the lens is f/5-6.3 even a 1.4x teleconverter will prevent the camera's AF from working reliably and the finder image will be quite a bit dimmer. And, i believe the lens is 150-600.

The 150-600 is a different (newer) lens.

As noted my Sigma 150-500 works fine with the Kenko 1.4 on my D5300.

I don't use that lens any more because I got the Nikon 200-600. I willed the Sigma to my wife. She doesn't use it, though (too heavy for her), so I need to sell it.

No. The rear of Nikon TC's will connect to any Nikon F mount body. The problem is that the rear of the Sigma lens will not mount to the front of Nikon TC's. To be sure, I did try the Sigma 150-500 with a Nikon TC again and there's no way to connect them.

FWIW, a Sigma 1.4X TC is the only "lens" I have ever bought then returned because of poor image quality.

Interesting. As noted there are no issues with the Kenko Pro 1.4 TC.

I have to admit I cannot see how there is an interference with the Nikon TC unless it has a lens element poking out. The lens element inside the Sigma 150-500 does move as you zoom but even at the furthest rear position (at 150mm) is over an inch inside the lens. The Kenko TC lens element is about a cm inside the TC.

BTW I found an interesting thing playing with the Sigma 150-500 and Kenko 1.4 on my D5300. It actually autofocuses much quicker and firmer with OS 1 on. And that is with the lens zoomed to 500mm. The f-stop is f9 there.

Just to note I did send the 150-500 to Sigma for a firmware update a little over a year ago. It was necessary to work with my D5300 because Nikon did something to the D5300 to make it not work. Sigma did the update free and paid the return shipping. The lens is way out of warranty.

By the way the electronics works to account for the fstop hit of the TC. That is you see the corrected fstop in the viewfinder.

PS: the guy who stated the viewfinder gets dark isn't right either.

If you are looking for one to auto focus, forget it; the lens is too slow for that. Nikon's older manual focus TC's are a good choice.
