Paint Shop Pro, never left me wanting more, lot of discount offers on X9 now, probably time for X10 to come out, Bob.

Capture One makes a free Sony version that you can get for your a6000. Definitely start with that, and I bet you end up buying the Pro version (as I did) and never go to Adobe.

thank you so much. very helpful!
i was hoping to install the software on my regular old timey computer. not on a lap top. do you know if it is best/only possible on a lap top?
best, nancy

The monitor is most important. If you don't calibrate it with a hardware/software package, such as a DataColor Spyder5Pro or an X-RITE i1, you might as well not bother post-processing anything!

While you can SORT OF calibrate a laptop monitor, it is best to plug in an external monitor and calibrate it. So either a laptop or desktop will do.

Monitor must be capable of displaying at least 100% of the sRGB color space, and preferably the full Adobe RGB color space.

i have a sony a 6000 if that makes any difference.
i'm not that talented in the tech world so looking for something not too complicated.

I've tried a plethora of software over the years. Corel, ACDsee, On 1, and so on. I keep coming back to Lightroom which I've used since version 1 and Photoshop CS. It's likely that I will leave the Adobe realm soon as expect them to take LR to a subscription only model soon based on all the "rumors" floating around these days.

I had hoped that On One Raw would fit the bill but I just can't seem to feel comfortable with its interface. I have a demo version of Capture One and am leaning on that direction.

Many programs have free trial versions. Pick one or two and try them. You will surely find one that fits you and your own style.

Happy Shooting

Photoshop Elements could be a good choice to start.

Well, I have tested a few different PP softwares just recently with the rumors of an Adobe price increase, so here's my take for a Windows computer:

If you are a pro shooting RAW and have 100-1000 photo batches of images, stick to Lightroom and PS. The workflow on these cannot be matched by the newcomers for speed, consistent results and ease of use, especially if you already have a familiarity with them.

If you are an amateur, have lots of free time, and don't depend on photography for your living, you can, and probably should try Corel's Paintshop Pro and Aftershot (for RAW processing) as well as Serif's Affinity Photo. You might also add your camera manufacturers processor. Download all, (one at a time) and give each a go with about 100 photos and see which appeals to you more. Evaluate them both for methodology, storage (cataloging), and results. Some of us just work better with certain programs. At $49 each, you are not losing much if, after the trial, you find something you don't like and you decide to switch.

Affinity Photo is another option that is easier on the wallet.

I recommend purchasing the monthly 9.95 download of Lightroom. You also get photoshop with it and the upgrades are included

Would you please tell us where you can get LR&PS for $4.00 a month, I'm paying $10.00.

LightroomCC/PhotoshopCC package $9.95 a month. About the price of a good hamburger for the best editing software on the planet with the most educational opportunities. YouTube is full of free tutorials and if you want full courses there are affordable subscription lessons available from Lynda.com and KelbyOne plus some others. I have CapureOne and I am just a little miffed trying to learn all their language conventions. It's a great tethering program but so is the CamRanger, Lightroom needs a little help in the area, in my opinion.

This recommendation is the one you should listen to everything I would have said ,support support , support, it is everywhere I use a standalone CS6 can't get any more updates but no payments. look around your area for a used pass along if not CC6 if you already have internet connection. For Me I really can't afford that it's around $120.00 a month for the connection it's the only reason I don't have cc . Also get a good copy of Adobe camera raw it is a great guide read it from front to back.. .

Affinity Photo is easy on your wallet and works pretty well but what format can you save your finished work as. I'd like to see some changes to their program before I'd buy it.

I just took a photo class with an instructor who shoots professionally for Arizona Highways. He and most in the class use and love Lightroom and Photoshop CC. I have Elements 15 and found nothing I couldn't do that they could. It's cheap and I own it. Also as a student I got the combo Elements and Premier (for videos) for the same price (B&H). It's all I need. Many others will disagree, but that is my personal experience.

Save/Save As options create an Affinity Photo file. Using the Export option allows saving as PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, PDF, SVG, WMF, EPSON, EXR or HDR files.

Where can you get it it for $4 a month? This is 40% of what is the regular price so if you can tell me where to get this bargain I would appreciate it.
