Another frequent mistake that bugs me is the use of "loose" instead of "lose". I even saw this one in a NYTimes editorial. Complaining about this makes me feel like Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, but I need to be a curmudgeon at least some of the time!

When I was in 7th grade, I had Miss Velma Heiserman who drilled grammar daily. When I did my under grad work at Kent State, I took Advanced Grammar for English majors, didn't buy the book and still got an A. I hated her class when I was in it but thanked her later.

Miss Heiserman had a hearing aid. She would ask me something like, "What part of speech is this word?" I would say, with a very low voice, "That is an adjective." She would turn up her hearing aid and say, "If I have told you once, I have told you a hundred times. It is an adjective. Now what part of speech is this word." I would answer in a very loud voice, "It is an adverb." She would cringe and say, "That's right." Then she would readjust her hearing aid.

We gave that old maid fits but she was a great grammar teacher. I still feel a bit guilty about the way we treated her.
