Man, I didn't expect the amount of interest in one old guy being accused of being the "Bouncer Photographer"!

One thing led to another and in my research today I discovered that in the City of Newport Beach you have to obtain a Film Permit if you are a student, but not if you are an amateur. Adding insult to injury if you are a "Student" in Newport Beach, CA then you are required to obtain a "Film Application Permit" and with a letter on the letter head of your educational institution then you will not have to pay the $483.00 application fee, but may have to pay other fees as determined by their fine city's departments.

If you are an amateur then you are not required to obtain a permit. I would like to aspire to be a Professional and earn a livable income from my photography, but I currently earn none. That might indicate I need to become a "Student". Otherwise I am an amateur.

Not so fast! Back up! Avoid the Permit? or Avoid the fees!

So, I am now an "Amateur Bouncer Photographer" and don't need a permit. I don't aspire to be a "Professional Bouncer Photographer" either. I could use some type of force equalizer such as a "Bear Spray" (forget the little canisters they don't shoot far enough).

Is California the ony place in the US that is this far left and stupid? Man would I like to move back to Texas!

If all this wasn't so absurd it would be funny! I can assure you one and all that I do hereby declare myself to be nothing more than a rank amateur photographer who will not bother to photograph anywhere close to Balboa Pier or in the City of Newport Beach.

I would also like to recommend that any of you who may be visiting Southern California as Tourist - Welcome! If anyone asks, you are an amateur because the Cities, County and State are all in on this as is our Federal Agencies controlling land and National Parks.

Lastly, avoid spending a penny in Newport Beach! They don't need the money, they have a healthy supply of drunks and expensive real estate! Please do bring your official "Official Bouncer Photographer" Badge.

Below is a picture of Balboa Pier. I have lost all desire to photograph in Newport Beach, Ca and frankly don't believe I'll miss it!

If you need directions, face east, and drive about 1,000-miles. And don't let the door hit you on the way out of state.

No directions needed. You happen to live in one of the more "Photographer Friendly" cities in Southern California. Thank you for your encouragement and I'll make sure the door doesn't hit me on the way out.

Additionally, I would like to say that you have a ton of beautiful photographs over on Flickr and I would recommend anyone to take the time and enjoy.

LOL!!! Thomas, that is one reason i moved to texas last month (spring time in hill country) from so cal where i'd spent most of my life. Incredible state california, but a sad example of the consequence of P.C. thinking and changing demograpics without regard to the rule of law or adherence to the values that made this country great. San Antonio ain't half bad!

I guess we should shut down those National Parks and let the people do what they like????? I'm sure that would work out well.....

Thomas, you do know that california, from the central coast north, has got to be possibly The most wonderful place in the country! Check out california's 'lost coast' sometime. Gorgeous and impossible that it exists in the 21st century.

not with captain moonbeam as gov and a $15 BILLION dollar defecit. Not to mention the inevitable big one that is bound to hit cali sometime, turning Topeka Kansas as an ocean front city.

Why, Nikonian.

The OP paid you a compliment. What? Not even a polite "thank you"?

Man, I didn't expect the amount of interest in one... (show quote)
I would guess that NB probably doesn't want 8,000 aspiring UCLA film students crawling all over their infrastructure with a bunch of super-8 Rolliflexes. Also, a quick check showed that Newport Beach has a huge Republican Majority in its registered voters, so I don't think left-leaning liberal PC has that much to do with its regulations..

I was lucky enough to visit San Francisco including an area which I believe is known as Haight-Ashbury, but this was in the late 1960's and I'm sure no one ever objected to having their picture taken, in fact I doubt if ANYONE was ever aware of what other folks were doing.

I can close my eyes and be back in that unbelievable place in a heartbeat but I then need someone to prise my eyes open as I drift into my own little World with the group Doors rattling away in my hollow head...

Happy days, happy memories and a beautiful location. Never were the words... Make love, not war more apt!

I think we too often consider things from only our own POV rather than looking at things on all sides. Ever consider why such a requirement as permits for students may have developed? Could it be that there is a film school nearby, and too many times students went into the streets, disrupting traffic, causing safety problems, putting themselves and others in danger?

An amateur may be filming once in a blue moon, but a student would have to be out filming much more frequently. Multiply that by hundreds of students and you may have a serious potential for problems.

Rather than immediately believing something is stupid or nonsensical if we don't understand it at first light, perhaps look at something from someone else's perspective. You might get a whole new side of the concept.

Sorry, enough of my ranting.
