I dropped my camera on a gravel driveway last summer. I sent it to a Nikon Repair Center in Wyandotte, MI that has it about 2 months. They took the lens apart and re set it. They did not know how to fix the body so they sent it to NIKON. The camera does not perform that way it used to. I had it insured and I wish they had told me that it could not be fixed and then I could have gotten a new one. What to do ????

I would inform them that it is not fixed. If they cannot fix it, they should refund what you paid. File with the insurance and get a new camera; you paid for that.

Nikon covers repairs with a 180 day warranty. So, man up and send it back if it is within the 180 day repair warranty. Tell them specifically what it is not doing and TELL them to repair it.

Does anyone else see a problem here?

Collect the insurance and buy another one. On any repair ask for an estimate. And find someone that makes protective box that will go around it. Don't hold your camera with two fingers. Never use it to take the place of your basketball. And the most important. Insure it. Sorry hope your ok. Keep laughing.

Vibration Reduction should be turned off when camera is mounted on a tripod.

I usually have vibration setting "on". The majority of photos I take are landscapes, from vistas to up close details. ISO 125 either apeture or shutter setting. I did take a few photos recently with the setting on SCENE:LASNDSCAPE and they came out darker but sharper. I am using the 18-140 mm lens. Before the drop, I had no complaint about sharpness. I am ready to call NIKON and discuss.

VR should be OFF when on tripod. as for the rest of the info you provided - again, you gave no specifics.

The problem is you and your snide remarks.

Did the OP say that the camera is on a tripod most of the time? If that is the case, then the VR should be off shouldn't it?

You could be better off not sending it out for repair at all but you've already done so. So take your lost and buy a new camera. The D7500 is really an upgrade from the D5300.

Not so much. Weighs and costs over twice as much, lacks fully articulated screen (much more powerfull than tilt), lacks GPS, and has a clunky random button/ unreadable green screen approach with inactive Info screen compared to the elegant D5300 active info screen. Includes Nikon downgrade to eliminate second card advantage of earlier D7xxx models.

The touch screen on the D5500 might be an advantage for some.

Buy a new camera...and a neck strap. Insurance does not cover negligence on your part...which dropping the camera is.

My insurance did.
