Pg 1: 2-Dog Don, I have Finepix S5700. I never heard of a bridge camera. Not familiar with the term. My Fujifilm is the first and only digital camera that I have. Since being on UHH I would like to get a better one. But finances says "No way".

I second that book as well, But Friedman's is the very best.

I don't know any thing about your camera but I want to tell you what I did. I have a FujiFilm. No instructions came with it so I wrote to the company asking for a booklet. Right away I was sent a desk size book and a smaller one to carry with me. The smaller one is a duplicate of the larger one.
I hope you will contact the company with your request.
Good Luck to you.

Thanks that is a great idea. I loved Fuji I have 2 bridge fuji cameras they are great and do not get all the credit they deserve.

I'm not 100% positive but I believe I read on a review site that Fuji cameras are made by Pentax and there have been several models that were virtually identical. If so, that explains why the Fujis are excellent bang for the buck.

Essentially a bridge camera has an affixed lens that can't be taken off the body but it will be a long zoom to fit most all situations so you're well prepared for most anything. A bridge model will usually also have a viewfinder like a dSLR, manual capabilities like a dSLR, etc. but some do not shoot in RAW mode. A bridge model will typically be a bit smaller and lighter than a dSLR. The bridge camera will also have a smaller sensor than a dSLR but the sensor will big larger than a P&S.

The word "bridge" comes from the manufacturers wanting to "bridge the gap" between Point & Shoot simple cameras and the much higher priced dSLR world.

I have the Alpha 55. I bought the Busch book and found it to be an expanded volume of what the operation manual had already told me. A bit more detail that might benefit beginners to photography but I didn't really learn anything from the book that the operation manual hadn't already told me. I also got the impression that a lot of the text was copy/pasted from books about other cameras with "the Sony Alpha 55" inserted in empty slots throughout then tweaked a little.

Sit down in your comfortable chair with your operators manual and the camera on the lamp table beside you. Just read the whole thing and look at what they're talking about right on the camera. You won't kill anything, you certainly won't be wasting film, and you'll be amazed how you have become familiar with features before going out to shoot.

I expected to have difficulty away from home and took the manual with me in my case for a while but it turned out to not be rocket science or brain surgery (or was that rocket surgery and brain science?) so now the manual is back in the cardboard box.

Hi

I have had an Alpha 65 for about 6 months and love it. It is my third sony camera. If you have any specific questions, please IM me and I will do what I can to assist you. I did purchase the book Sony SLT A65 by David Buscsh. Not the best book I have seen, but it does help with learning the camera.

Thanks to all for helping me on this quest. I took the advise to heart and bought David Busch's field guide book. I have lots of books and before I retired I used to write help systems and user manuals. His are among the best I have ever read.

Now for the fun part. One of the features that lead me to the A65 was the ability to preview the depth of field I take lots of bird and amimal pictures in zoos and like to get rid of things like cages, fences etc. The Alpha has a menu setting that configures the Focus Hold buttonas either focus hold (AF Lock) as Depth of field preivew. When you press the help (?) button for this setting the camera displays "Sets the focus hold button of lenses with focus hold button." So off I go looking for the focus hold button on my lenses. No such button. Read my next post for the rest of this rant

OK I try Sony tech support via chat. After about 15 minutes explaining my quest to someone in a far off land who only has the camera manual to go by tells me my lenses do not have the button that I know that I do not have. About ready to pack up the camera to take it back to Best Buy when my Busch book arrives. In about 3 minutes I find the location of the button on the camera housing and it is called the preview button which is actually configured using the Focus Hold button. Moral of the story question information that you get from tech support! Get a second opinion. If I did not have experience in this field I would have taken the camera back. Thanks to all the UHH for their help and advise. I love this place!

I still say you should go to Friedman's website. His eBooks provide suggested set-ups for all the buttons (and why he suggests same). Busch is good. Friedman is better IMHO.
