Here is my two cents as a current airline employee. When you purchase a ticket the ticket holder is agreeing to the carriage of contract. All airlines have this contract, wording may be different between carriers but all are essentially the same. The people that get screwed are the non-revs, they are the first ones to be pulled and they are not offered any compensation. Flight 3411 evidentily did not have any non-rev or there would not have been a problem. When it comes to crew if they are deadheading they have to be in uniform and they are being position to take a flight. Someone has suggested that they could rent a car and drive to their destination, but keep in mind that the drive time cuts into their crew time which means that the flight that they were taking would be delayed until another crew was brought in to take the flight.

All airlines overbook by at least 10 percent, this takes into account those that don't show up or take an earlier flight and don't change their reservations to reflect the change. It also means that they are less likely to leave with empty seats. As a standby flier I thank the lord when someone doesn't show up and I can get on the plane. I have an advantage in that I can watch the seating and can change my flights accordily. Other wise myself and family spend the night in the airport before we can get a flight.
