Everybody is down on United - and, to an extent, rightly so. But, what about the jackbooted Chicago police that bloodied him?
They should have arrested the guy for criminal trespass when he refused to leave. Part of the deal is you can be vacated and compensated. Do I like what happened? No,absolutely not.

It turns out it was airport police.
If this guy had been a known motorcycle gang leader, many would be cheering. Instead,it was a douche bag who happened to be a doctor. Wait until the story comes out and see what you think about this upstanding physician. Meanwhile,United is like a cat on asphalt trying to bury doodoo because their stock dropped.

I think the problem, Dave, is that he'd already been seated. It's one thing to be bumped before you get your boarding pass. That's understandable. United should have know that this situation existed before they seated the entire plane and it was ready to take off. It will be interesting to see at what point the UA employees made it known that they needed a ride....and if they were supposed to fly the next day.....and whether or not they could have been replaced with another crew.

Most are not current with the latest story regarding what actually happened. You should get it soon or certainly by morning if you don't catch the news tonight. Seems the good re-instated doctor had already agreed to the bump and an $800 bonus and apparently backed out upon hearing the new schedule....regardless I think it stinks, but the policy is what it is and he knew it.

What policy? I fly and I don't know that there's a policy that they can kick me off a plane once I've been seated. I could understand being bumped before I was seated, but not once I was on a plane. Where does this policy come from. The news said that he backed out of the deal when he found out that he would not get home by morning when he needed to be at work.

If you want to change the policy to fit your words and add a condition, I guess you can. If we want to play lawyer I would say that he made a contract to be bumped for a consideration and than reneged. I don't know, but again, crazy to speculate and interpret on not much information.

You talk about a policy. Show me the policy. Yeah....I'd agree.....that you could get bumped BEFORE you got seated. That's not what I call getting bumped. I'd say that you can get bumped all the way up to the point that you're given a boarding pass. Show me something that says you can actually be taken off a plane once you've been boarded.

Steve, our interpretation does not matter. What we can be shown are rules that essentially give them the right to change our routes or whatever,as long as we are compensated. Simple enough,go to airline websites and review their policies.

All other things aside, if I found out my doctor had to be dragged out of a plane screaming like a woman and putting on such a display, I am afraid I would have to question his judgement. What is he going to do if he is in a tough medical situation, with my life in the balance? Lie down in the floor of the operating room, or emergency room, or where ever we would happen to be and scream like a woman? I am sorry, but I had to wonder about his mental stability. Time to find another doctor.
I am not unsympathetic to his situation, but it seems there might have been recourse protocols that would have brought better results and allowed him to maintain a measure of dignity.
Let's look at another side of this. The media has spun this into orbit. What if this individual was of Arabic origin? The story would have taken a completely different direction and the sympathies toward this passenger would be quite different. Society is very much on edge these days and had I been in this passenger's situation, I would have gotten off the plane, regardless of how unfair the situation might be. These days you could get shot acting like that guy did. I still question his mental stability.
The airline does bear a heavy burden of responsibility here. I could pretty much guarantee that nobody in the airline's employ directed this man's or anyone else's attention to the fine print regarding how and when you can be booted off a plane. They could argue that the fine print is there, but who these days reads anything, much less fine print.
