I live on Hawaii Island and travel via Hawaiian Airlines to Oahu when traveling to foreign/U.S. destinations. For Hawaiian inter-island flights I pack 3 lenses (18-35,70-200,300 prime f2.8) and 3 Nikon bodies plus miscellaneous small stuff in my photo back pack and put it under the seat in front of me cuz it won't fit in overhead. Small stuff like cards, batteries, etc. goes in my photo vest which goes in overhead. On regular full size planes everything goes in overhead except Induro tripod in case with change of clothes, etc. and that is checked luggage. No problems but I worried about it a lot on first trip through Honolulu years ago.

Must see: On Kauai - Kalalau Valley; was (and maybe still is) rated most beautiful beach in the south pacific by the Sierra Club. If you're fit, you can hike in (11.5 miles I believe). Otherwise the only way to get on the beach is to find a local hawaiian with a boat; it's worth it. It is a magical place full of mango groves, tarot, wild fruits, goats, a steam with fresh water shrimp, waterfalls, an ocean cave, an incredible Haow and (at least sometimes) waves that break for a REALLY long way with seagulls surfing the curl. Hanakapiai is about 2 miles in with great (but dangerous) body surfing and a world class waterfall.

Just a suggestion. Get a Alaska Airlines credit card and you will get one companion flight per/year for only $100. We go a lot and both of us have CC's and Alaska is actually lower in price than Hawaiian. Hawaiian is a good airline-just pricey.

I'm headed to Hawaii next week and thought I would take the trinity of lenses (14-24, 24-70, 70-200) with my Nikon D810. Any recommendations on a backpack just large enough to hold them within the Hawaiian airline limits? My focus will be on Maui and Kauai, so suggestions re the "must sees" are also welcome!

I just returned from Kauai and packed all my photo equipment in a back pack wIhich went into the overhead compartment. You just need to comply with the
size restrictions for carry on luggage. Also brought my tripod on board. i flew on Alaska airlines. I would suggest you contacty hawaiian airlines and verify their restrictions. I had no TSA issues. Good luck...

I recently purchased this Tenba 15" Messenger Bag (professional camera bag) which also accommodates my 15" MacBook Pro. Brought my laptop, Nikon D610 and three lenses on United from NY to Colorado Springs and back. It fit right under my seat. Watch the video and see what you think. I love good design and this bag is very well designed. The other nice thing is the whole camera portion of the bag lifts out so that you can convert the bag to a laptop/meeting bag, as well.

I believe B&H carries Tenba.

Good luck.

We do that trip often. I have a Tenba that I can put my computer in.
Over the years I have quit taking my 70-200. I've found that I rarely use it.
On our last trip I used my 15-36 F:4 and my 28-300. (Rarely if ever get much past 70mm) and my 50mm 1.4. (Shot 200+ in marginal weather)
Were it me I'd leave the big guy home and save the weight. Mine hasn't been to Hawaii in 5 years.
Remember cropping is your friend particularly with an 810.

I have 2 friends that work for Delta and you can carry on a Pelican 1510 case with no weight restrictions. That's exactly why I bought this case, for airline travel. Always do a search on the net to see what the restrictions are. Delta's is 22x14x9 and/or no larger than 45 linear inches with no weight restriction except for travel to a couple of foreign countries.

Heed the suggestion to check individual airline carry-on weight restrictions! You'd be surprised how many max out at 22 lbs especially for US and international domestic/regional airlines. The 1510 weighs about 14 lbs empty.
