I'm headed to Hawaii next week and thought I would take the trinity of lenses (14-24, 24-70, 70-200) with my Nikon D810. Any recommendations on a backpack just large enough to hold them within the Hawaiian airline limits? My focus will be on Maui and Kauai, so suggestions re the "must sees" are also welcome!

Think Tank shapeshifter and a photo vest in case you need to pare your backpack weight.

FYI: From my experience, Hawaiian Airlines Interisland flights "carry on restrictions are much more stringent on size than American Airlines from the mainland. I planned to use a smaller Lowepro camera backpack for gear than my larger camera Lowepro backpack for my trip later this year. Must do shots for the Big Island is the volcano flowing into the ocean from a boat ride (sunrise or sunset is best). We were on Kauai this past March and had planned a flight over to the Big Island and our lava boat trip was cancelled at the last minute due to bad weather. Night shots of the Kilauea Caldera are also awesome. Check out: https://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cams/

Sunrise at Haleakla is awesome and do then do the sunrise bike ride down the mountain on the Big Island.

Any helo flights are very nice on all islands and a must. Hana Road on Maui is manadatory!

Hawaiian Airlines is the only airline that ever weighed my camera bag and insisted that it could not be carried on. I removed a body and my longest lens and wore it around my neck. That seemed to satisfy the attendant. Of course once on the plane it went back into the bag! Have a great trip.

Kauai is our home away from home....North shore of Kauai for sure. Take a boat ride to the Na Pali Coast or take a helo ride in Kauai (a must). Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Lookout is awesome, unless you get clouded in. Get a sunset drink at the St Regis in Princeville. Hanalei Bay Pier for sunset also is nice.

Just hope you don't have to check it with the luggage. TSA locks are like no locks at all. I prefer to travel with a compact camera. Of course, since I'm not flying any more, I bring whatever I can fit into my car. I have a couple of Lowepro backpacks - good quality

I make this trip every year with two D750's & three lenses and I carry them in their own camera cases inside a moderate size generic backpack that fits underneath the seat in front of me but I place the backpack in a small roll on so I can store it in the overhead storage if there is room. If they run out of overhead storage I just pull the backpack and place it under the seat and have them check the carry on. If you want to use overhead storage make certain you will board early enough to find space. The airlines are often at full capacity these days. The older I get the heavier the gear gets but it is nice to have the variety of lenses available. Have a great trip. Best bets on Kauai are Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Overlook. Get there by daybreak and before the crowds arrive and you will have great photo opportunities and better yet time to observe the beautiful small birds and the quiet sounds of surf far below and no helicopters. The lighthouse and the two botanical gardens are not to be missed plus walking the cliffs path around the Hyatt and CJM stables in Koloa are very good for photos. You can drive your car to the back side of CJM stables and have just a short walk to Kaieie Waho Channel or Bay. This is a photographer's dream location and the hiking is safe. The deserted sugar mill in Koloa is also a good photo op. Have fun.

Na Pali coast is an absolute must do. They have diving trips which are great or just a boat ride. Do not miss this chance..

Last (and only) time I was in Hawaii was on my way to Viet Nam in June 1970. Flew in what I think was a stripped cargo plane, duffle bag half under the seat and half between my legs. Cameras were not allowed. It flew like a cargo plane ,too... we did get to walk around the plane...it was warm and the night sky was beautiful...

I have 2 friends that work for Delta and you can carry on a Pelican 1510 case with no weight restrictions. That's exactly why I bought this case, for airline travel. Always do a search on the net to see what the restrictions are. Delta's is 22x14x9 and/or no larger than 45 linear inches with no weight restriction except for travel to a couple of foreign countries.
