To all of you who have graciously offered your help and advice: Thank you, and problem solved. Like everything else viewed in 20/20 hindsight, it should have been obvious had I sat and reasoned it out rather than trying to use a dumb-downed automatic mindset. Answer is set the camera to the lens most wide open, then set the lens ring (after focusing) to where you want it. Then read the light meter and set the SS. (I do have auto ISO but prefer to keep it at 100). It works fine, altho it labels it 1.4 or 1.8, depending on the lens, but I could care less about that. When I started with digital, I also started with automatic functions, and only now am I sorting it all out. Thanks again for the advice, write back and call me stupid, but at 73 I am still learning.
