Hello everyone, soon I'll buy a Nikon d7100 (only the body)currently I have a Nikon d90 with the 18-200 dx vr lens,my question is,should I keep it and use it with the d7100 or should I buy another one, resuming,is it a good lens or not??? I will appreciate any suggestions or opinions(English is my second language sooo, sorry if you see something weird)

This is a photo my wife took hand held in June 2015 with the D7100 and 18-200 lens. We enlarged it to 20" x 24" and it is sharp.

I keep the 18-200 on my 7100 as my walk around lens.

I keep the 18-200 on my 7100 as my everyday walk around lens.

Good decision.

I purchased my 18-200 as a means of only taking a single lens on a trip to Europe with my D80. Now that I have moved to a D7100 it is still my go to/walk around lens. I feel that it is near impossible to find a better or more versatile lens at anywhere near the cost.

Hope you enjoy your D7100 as much as I am enjoying mine.

You can change out the 18-200 on both of your crop sensor cameras. I would definitely keep it and save your money for another lens, perhaps with more reach, or wide angle, macro, etc. I love my 18-200 on my d7000. It stays on most of the time and is great for traveling, vacation, walking around, etc. Have fun shooting.

You are the one to answer that question. You have used the 18-200VR and you should know if you are satisfied with its quality. Why not using the money to buy another lens?
I have one and I am satisfied with its quality but that is me.

The 18-200 would do you fine as long as you are not trying to shoot at a long distance. The 200-500 is a better lens if your finances are up to the challenge. Not knowing what you prefer to shoot, I would also suggest looking at the d7200 before buying the d7100. The d7200 has a larger buffer for shooting action shots in bursts and is not that much more expensive if you buy refurbished or used.

The Nikon 18 - 200 is about the only lens I use on my dx Nikon. I would be lost without it. If you let it go you will be sorry! It is just about the best all round lens you could have for your 7100!

Do you have one, Jenn? I have seen poster sized prints from this lens that are tack sharp. I have used mine for the past 5 years and would put its performance up against any other lens in the same zoom range! Can't beat its quality for the size, range and weight!

There is nothing wrong with the 18-200 lens for an average photographer or for average photography. It will do the job. At your stage (having a D90 thinking about a D7100) it is all you need at this point in time. My wife and I had two 18-200's for our two D200's. We sold both camera's and kept one of the lenses because it was so sharp we didn't want to lose it. Even though we both had D800s, we decided to buy a D7200 so we could use the remaining 18-200 lens. For us it was a wise choice. Keep the lens, upgrade to the D7100 or D7200 and think about the 35mm 1.8 when you can afford the upgrade.

Actually you know in photography as in life you have favorites. I loved your lens on my D7000. I remember shooting my granddaughter
and a big crowd at her pool birthday party. I grab shot everything and was so happy with the color rendition/brightness and ease of using the lens.
I had read online it had kind of a cult following of likes. You might want to get one prime 1 or 2 for the camera. When you are ready.
Good luck. T

I've had the 18-200 for over 10 years and it is a great all purpose lens. I found it especially good in cities or areas not needing a far reach. I do find it a bit fuzzy at its full focal length though. I also use a 80-400 that produces excellent results. I shoot with a D500.
