I purchased a Sony 24-70 a mount G lens used from Amazon. The lens cap supplied is too large for the camera. So, I'm trying to find a suitable lens hood. B&H sent the link for a Vello hood (77mm). Reviews are mixed on the Vello. Any guidance as to how to obtain a suitable lens hood is greatly appreciated. PS: A vendor on Amazon lists an OEM lens cap for $100.
First, are you looking for a
lens hood or a
lens cap? You seem to be mentioned both rather interchangeably, but they are two different things. I don't know why a lens cap would be too large for a camera... Do you mean the cap you received for the
lens is incorrect size?
Is this the lens you bought?
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/545868-REG/Sony_SAL2470Z_SAL_2470Z_24_70mm_f_2_8_Carl.htmlI think it's wrong, but according to B&H Photo's listing for it, that lens uses an ALC-SH0005 Sony Lens Hood (and a standard 77mm lens cap... widely available and relatively cheap).
HOWEVER, elsewhere it appears that it uses ALC-SH101 Sony Lens Hood. Someone online suggested that the SH0005, which appears to be for 16-80mm might also work on the 24-70mm.
But I don't think that's likely... that 24-70mm appears to be larger diameter, using 77mm filters... while the 16-80mm uses much smaller 62mm filters.
There are no ALC-SH101 available anywhere that I can find. There's an OEM Sony ALC-SH0005 on eBay for $47 (but, again, I really doubt it will fit your lens).
The OEM Sony hoods for now-discontinued lenses are rare and tend to be quite expensive... if you can find them.
If you want an OEM hood, I'd just keep searching the major used equipment dealers (B&H, Adorama, KEH, Henry's, etc.). Eventually you might find one but should be prepared to pay a lot for it, though hopefully not as much as Amazon and eBay price-gouging sellers are asking for them. Also keep an eye on Amazon and eBay, in case someone lists one at a reasonable price. At many of these websites you can set up an alert to notify you if the item you want comes available.
EDIT: I just found the following listing at Newegg for $27:https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4AU1M98160&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-_-pla-_-Camera+Filters-_-9SIA4AU1M98160&ef_id=UmAP@wAAAAMCB5NI:20140630161041:sAt that price I suspect that's a third party screw-in hood (same as is available cheaper from B&H)... not an OEM Sony hood. But it's hard to tell from the photo and I may be wrong. Might be worth checking out.
Alternative is a third party lens hood... Vello, Opteka, Sensei, Fotodiox, Pearstone, Dot Line, Neewer, Fotodiox and many others make lens hoods. There are at least two major types of third party hoods: Dedicated that are close copies of the OEM hood, usually bayonet mount type. And generic that screw on, but may be similar to the OEM. With tulip-shape such as is used on that lens, the screw-in type are a bit inconvenient and may be difficult to keep aligned to prevent vignetting. Some screw-in an adapter the hood clips onto (Vello), which allows the hood to be reversed for storage. The type that simply screws in cannot be reversed. Thickness of these "generics" also might cause issues with vignetting if used in combination with a filter.
Looking at Vello's website, for example, they don't list a dedicated for 24-70mm Sony lens (I had high hopes, Vello makes lots of different dedicated hoods for specific lenses).
Here are a couple of the generic, screw-in type:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?sts=ma&ci=14548&N=4294204965&Ntt=77mm%20tulip%20lens%20hoodReally generic lens hoods such as those round rubber ones (or round rigid plastic or metal) will not do as good job shading a lens like a 24-70mm, as a "tulip" shaped hood will. With a round hood, you'll need to buy one that works for 24mm.... but it will do a pretty poor job shading the lens at 70mm.
Rubber ones also collapse easily, so don't give nearly as good physical protection to the lens against bumps, as a rigid hood does.
