The best, today, in my opinion is the new Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL.

It must be nice to be able to afford that lens.

I've made that comment regarding several Nikkor lenses.

And then you buy those expensive wire squares at the camera show.

What lens, which is not too overpriced, could be recommended?

I must ask do you have a d700 or a d7000?

Have you read the reviews? I can attest to how good it is. It is nice but I've worked my butt of for it.

As already stated, the Nikon 50mm af d lens is top notch and sells for $100. You can also pick up a 35-70 2.8 for about $300. The 24-120 af 3.5- xxx vr was sold as a kit lens for the D700, you might want to try it. Since pixel peepers think it soft around the edges, it sells used for about $150 used. The average photographer has for many years enjoyed that lens and has gotten many good pictures with it. I think it will do better for you than the 18-200. I have the D700 with the 24-120 vr and the 18-200 vr. I would definitely use the 24-120 before using the 18-200 on my D700. Of course the 24-200 vr f4 is better then both of them, but costs a lot more too. There are better lenses, but not without spending a lot more money. Good Luck.

I would suggest the 24-120 f/4.
Won't break the bank and is very good.
It is an FX lens also so will be great on a D700.

Id ditch the DX 18-200 and get the 28-300 FX lens.

There is no best lens. You purchase a lens to fulfill your requirements. You alone can only decide what you need

Yup although the OP clearly stated that he has the D700 one must wonder if the OP didn't omit a zero.

Save up for a Nikon 17-35mm 2.8 and you will have one of the finest zooms Nikon has ever made for that focal range. Look for a good used on off of e bay.
Good Luck. The other lens for FX that will work is the 28-70mm 2.8, discontinued but find a used one.

A lot of folks use a 28-300, but I prefer the 24-85 or 24-120mm for you.
