Thanks, Susan. You're right, there was a breeze when I was shooting. While I'm careful about shutter speed when I'm shooting horses, I guess I should have upped it. I have found that when I'm shooting the horses, if I take multiple high speed shots, I've got a better chance of getting at least one that's pretty well focused.

You might find a better focus by focusing on something else at a similar distance and locking the focus. Or to try focus tracking.

Exactly..... I was photographing pelicans down at the pier for a specific class project. I shot 1700 raw photos in 2 hours... out of that I got about 200 great shots. So when shooting moving subjects I always use the multiple shot and just hold the button down and follow my subject. You will get something good.

By the way Sally.... I do really like your photographs.... especially the horses!! but you asked for comments..... I have never been good at taking any kind of criticism of my work. But I have found that having others critique my work... they see things that I may not. Please don't take anything I say as direct criticism of you or your work, but you will not improve if all you are told is " that's really nice... I really like that". To improve comments need to explain what they like about it, or what they may see wrong and make suggestions on how you can change it or improve it. I personally really like the photo of the two horses snuggling. The composition is great, you got up close and focused in on them. You captured their personality and it tells a great story. That's the type of comments I give and what I get from friends and classmates. You have to take the "I" out of the comments and think strictly about the photograph. I am still struggling to find my way in this world of photography, and I want my work to improve... so..... there you go.... take it for what it is... Keep shooting and enjoy what you are doing.

Do you use the tracking setting.

Hi Susan . . .First, let me thank you for your help. I posted the pictures because I really do want to improve. My camera has tracking focus and I'm using it . . .except it's counterintuitive to the old days when it was just one shot at a time and sometimes I forget to keep my finger down. I'm shooting in raw and jpeg now. I was out again yesterday. I've looked at the jpegs but haven't tried processing the raw yet.
Thanks again.

No... I use multiple focus points and I follow the subject while I'm shooting.

I am new to the forum and a new hobby photographer. My current passion is the wild horses in Arizona and our beautiful spring Mexican poppies. I'd really appreciate it if you'd take a look and then give me your feedback.
I recently switched from a Sigma 80-300 to a Canon 80-300 lens. I think it's helped with the clarity of my pictures. And, thanks to the info I've gained from following this forum, I've switched from multi-focus points to a single point. I've been using JPEG but started experimenting with RAW today. I'm currently using the software than came with my Canon Rebel for editing . . . I may need to invest in some different software.
Thanks for your time!

The horse pix are great. I bet it took a lot of patience to get them. Good job.
