I don't know where you got your figures but the last year results for Sony belie them.
According to Reuters, "Income before taxes for the year ending March 31 came in at 304.5 billion yen ($2.81 billion), a big rise from the 39.7 billion yen recorded during the same period last year. Operating profit rose 329.2 percent to 294.2 billion yen, its largest figure since fiscal 2007." It seems like the 2017 results, although still in profit, will not make as good reading due mainly to a $962-million write-down of paper assets in the Sony Picture Division.
If Sony is facing bankruptcy, that will be a big turn around in one short year although the earthquake will certainly have put a crimp in their style. The thing with Sony is that it has fingers in a lot of pies whereas Canon is pretty much a one trick pony. Canon's main market is shrinking rapidly whereas Sony's Markets are increasing. I'd be surprised if Canon doesn't turn things around but then I was surprised at IBM, at Kodak, at ......

Perhaps you know less about Canon than you think, they are more diversified than you suggest. Certainly not a 'one trick pony'. Nikon is also getting more diversified, although not as much as Canon so far.
Sony may be too diversified. It still makes some excellent products and technologies but that does not mean that it is invulnerable.
I have owned many Sony products over the years with no disappointments, but that does not mean that Sony has no business challenges to overcome.

And Apple buys their imaging sensors from Sony.
Yes. Last time I expressed that fact somebody asked why that mattered!
I'm certainly not anti Sony, but every company has strengths and weaknesses. Sony does appear to getting its turnaround in order, and I for one hope that they do so successfully.

Peter those financial reports were the summaries for each company in toto; not just the respective photo products divisions.
You can see for yourself just how healthy each was during that reporting period approximately 1 year ago.

That was the point, the health of the companies and their product divisions. Sony is not yet out pf the woods.

You're probably correct and my "one trick pony" is probably a bit OTT but even with my limited expertise in the area of big business I can see that Canon's profitability has dropped by approximately two thirds since the high of 2007.

I'm not sure a big company can be too diversified provided that management decisions are devolved to the divisions. Invulnerable? No! Any company which rests on it's laurels and fails to move with the times is vulnerable; I already mentioned Kodak and IBM but there are many more instances. Sony is a company which thrives on innovation, sometimes to its cost but often to great advantage. Where is Canon in innovation? I know that many Canon users complain that whilst new bodies appear on a regular basis, the changes and upgrades are minor while the increase in price is often significant. Where is the competition to the "killer" sensors offered by Sony (and Nikon) and where is the response to the mirrorless revolution?
I have no real axe to grind here and on a personal level I don't really care what Canon does or doesn't do. My investment in Minolta/Sony gear means I'm wedded to Sony whatever Canon may or may not come up with but on a more general level, genuine competition has to be good for the Consumer.

A reasonable perspective, but all tech companies go through constant transformation. Change is the only constant.
Canon is diversifying and innovating rapidly - at least for a Japanese company. From a silicon valley perspective they move at a glacial rate, but glaciers are quite effective over time. Just looking at profitability is a somewhat too simplistic measure.
Sony has clearly had some big failures, but also big successes. I expect that Sony will continue to do good things in the camera market, but so will Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Fujifilm, Panasonic and others.

Making predictions is a tricky business, especially about the future. What makes you think that the next five quarters could result in Nikon's demise?
Curious minds would like to know.
