I cut my thumb with a rotary blade on a Dremel tool at the end of January. I came inside, cleaned it, bandaged it, and took it easy. It was still bleeding through the bandage the next day, so I called my doctor. "Go to the ER."

After waiting a while, I was taken to the "Express" area. A nurse washed my thumb, bandaged it, and gave me two shots for tetanus. Luckily, I was in the "Express" area, so that took only ninety minutes.

Today I received the bill.

ER Services $3,185.00
Pharmacy $2,488.30
Preventive Care $20.00 Maybe that was telling me to be careful.
Total $5,693.30

Medicare has paid $773.18 and "adjusted" $4,664.01, leaving me with a bill of $276.11. My secondary insurance hasn't paid yet, but I should be liable only for a copay of $25 for an ER visit. When I called the hospital, she said their new policy is to bill the patient after a certain period of time, even if they haven't heard from insurance. So, I'll wait another month and see what happens.

You shouldn't have had to go to an ER. Is there " Walk In Clinic" near you ? If there is, the price would have been much more reasonable. For minor things Walk in clinics are OK. It seems to me that a bleeding cut finger is not a medical emergency, unless of course there is a lot of bleeding.

Went in for a sore throat last month. The bill was $800 for less than 5 minutes with the doctor. I still have a sore throat to this day.

There is no problem with health care in America. You injured yourself and chose to go to ER and were charged for services. If you didn't need stitches ,why did you go. You got fixed and now are complaining .

You called your doctor who directed you to the ER because he was not interested in doing his job, of which he has a responsibility to you being your Doctor. So, I would send the bill to your Doctor, let him pay it.

It is awesome people with pre existing conditions are finally getting equal treatment. Too bad that age is the new discriminator.

When a 25 year old at the same employer is paying less than $150/ mo and I have to pay $1200 at 62 and I am perfectly healthy... there is something wrong.

Double that figure with my wife... and go from a company $100 deductible to $8000.

I laugh when I hear someone defend our broken health care system.

Our president who has been promising to get rid of the "Affordable Health Insurance" as soon as he gets elected just last week finally woke up and said:
"Nobody knew, how complicated the health insurance ("Trumpcare") is!"
Nobody? Really?

I think "Nobody" referred to the people in Trump's circle.

In a related situation, I took one of my dogs to the vet yesterday because one of her hind legs isn't working well. He said it was probably a spinal problem. A CAT scan and surgery might help. Just out of curiosity, I asked about the cost. He said he knew of someone who had a scan done for a pet, and the cost was $8,000. Then, of course, there's the surgery.

Vets used to be reasonabley priced but the last few years their cost have gone through the ceiling. I guess they banned together and decided that that they wanted to give themselves the biggest raise in pay that any career has ever seen.

The VA system is a single payer system , correct ? My Father in Law just uses Medicare as the VA facilities are too far away and the wait is way too long.

Healthcare costs are astronomical because of Obamacare

And they weren't astronomical before the ACA?

Just not as astronomical because there was not the long list of required coverages, want them or not. And the increased paperwork adds expense also. Either the doctor does it when they should be seeing patients (expensive clerk) or they hire people to do it. My Primary Care told me he spends 1/3 of his time on the computer inputting the info for the clerks to file all the required reports.
