I hate it when I bid on something, then forget that I bid on it because it had a long timeframe...in the meantime, I bid on a similar item, win it, pay for it...then go to check my account and realize that I'm still winning the other one...crap.

Consider using EZ Sniper. It lists all the things you want to bid on and how much you are willing to pay.

That feeling of anticipation and dread while you're waiting for someone to outbid you must suck!
Good luck, I hope you get the result that you want!

Well, if I get the second teleconverter for my price, it will be half of what I paid for the other one, which was still a heck of deal. Together they would still be less than what they typically sell for on eBay.
If an item is listed for a long time, just put it on your watchlist until it is closer to the close.
I never bid on anything if I can't bid with only 6-10 seconds left in the auction. This helps you avoid the following:
a) what you did
b) raising your own price (eBay is proxy bidding)
c) second guessing yourself on how much you are really will to pay

There is your watchlist as long as someone starts the bidding you can finally decide at the end, i will queue items so if i lose the first i'm ready for plan b, real pain is when the backup plan is going to finish before the main event. then you have to juggle :)
Just book mark the item and then bid the highest amount you want to pay and bid in the last 10 sec. There is not timer to be outbid. Sometimes others are doing thre same thing and you are outbid but that is ok because you don't go over the price you want to pay. - Dave
My problem is placing a bid on a similar or identical item that I already purchased and received a while ago but forgot about; usually a minor accessory item, such as a lens cap, step-up ring, release cable, etc. Perhaps I should keep a detailed inventory checklist on what I have and what I still need to buy, in order to prevent double purchases in the future. And keep the list in front of me when I'm looking on eBay.

Depends on how much you want something my k5 i got for a very good price, but I built a wall to put off early bidders my last bid was about 50 over what i eventually paid, there were 2 or 3 bids go in on the last 10 seconds but too low to beat me. 1 fella was in there twice. I was happy not to go to my max but having the camera now i wouldn't be upset if I had :)
Do any of these services allow you to buy their software one time and use it to make 'sniping' bids?
I'm not a fan of these subscription or % of the price plans.
I travel way too much to be watching eBay that closely. Anyhow, there's still like 20hrs left which is like a lifetime for things to change. Not sweating yet. Now if there were 2 minutes left...that would be a different story.

you can always back out of the bid by saying you bid a wrong price. but what usually happens is the snipers will bid the last second and you'll be in the clear.

The automatic snipers certainly work, but manual sniping is in my experience more effective, but it really depends on how much you actually want that specific item. It's a discipline thing, and if it's just a piece of camera equipment - unless it is very special - another one comes along before very long. It's just another form of gambling - knowing when to hold 'em, and knowing when to fold 'em.
