Any chance of you posting that hawk shot. I've only been able to get one very good shot through a window and it was a single pane.

FWIW here is a recent hawk shot I took with my G1 on my D7000. It seems sharp enough to me and I see no reason to upgrade!

From what I understand you can send the G1 to Tamron and there is an upgrade they can do you will need to call them to get an RMA.

I don't have a G1 for comparison but bought the G2 a couple of weeks ago. Will know more about rating it when I've had time to use it more. Thus far, I couldn't be more pleased with a lens. It is tack sharp and so far the only downside is it seems to drain camera batteries faster than other lenses.

Excellent shot. Any sharper and my eyes would bleed😎. I will save my coins and stick with the G1.

I don't even see a need to send it off to Tamron for an update. It might get damaged in shipping. I do not expect anything sharper or clearer than this. I understand the newer version might be weather resistant, but I never go out in inclement weather with my camera anyway.

Thank you! It's worth noting that I shot it at 600mm@ f11 as I had good light!

Clearly, I need to give mine another chance as I did not get that clarity out of it.

I am curious to know if anyone who bought the first generation of this lens has upgraded or is considering to upgrade to the G2. I read a review in either Outdoor Photography or Shutterbug that the G2's specs are just as good as the Sigma Sport model. Of course the G2 price is around $400.00 more than was the first version when it came out. Has anyone heard what a ball park trade in value/sale to a camera store (B&H, KEH, Adarama, etc.) could be? My lens is so mint it has never been used.

If you have never use the G1 why would you want a G2?

It is important to make sure you use a high enough shutter speed if you don't use a monopod or tripod. The rule of thumb is the reciprocal of the effective focal length of the lens so at 600 millimeter on a DX camera and you have to shoot at a thousandth of a second.

Yes, did all that and with tripod. I just found it awkward and difficult to get consistently crisp and clear shots with it. Perhaps I'm just happier and more used to hand holding my D4 with my 80-200mm or the 28-70mm lens as a style of image capturing which works better with me.

I tried fixed setups from rock solid tripods and places, remote releases, higher shutter speeds and isos and all the rest but my batting average for the lens just wasn't high enough for what I'm used to.

Hence, it's in the box in the camera cabinet.

That's damn good, I wouldn't change a thing! Great IQ and detail. About how far away was this shot taken and how much cropping did you have to do?

Here is a bit of tried, and true advice about Tamron G1 and G2 150-600mm lenses. I shoot most of my shots off a very sturdy tripod, with my G1. So far this lens has been sent into Tamron twice for firmware upgrade cleaning and calibration. Since the lens came out, Canon introduced a few new bodies, such as the 5D Mark IV. The lens need a firmware upgrade to accommodate the specs. for the new camera. My friend, a good photographer himself, found a used G1, and started shooting shore birds with his G1 and 7D Mark II. His shots were terrible, and none seemed in focus. We exchanged lenses for me to see if the problem was with his camera, and/or technique. It was neither, it was the lens. He sent it into Tamron for a warranty repair. He was told the warranty was only for the original purchaser, and this lens had a history of problems from the original purchaser. The cost to repair the lens was about 1/2 what he paid for the G1. The moral of this story is buy long lenses "New" refurbished, or from a known vendor who warranties their lenses. (KEH) The lens has not returned to him yet. We plan on giving the lens a workout in my large backyard, using a stripped pole at a fixed distance, with the lens mounted to my anvil like Bogan tripod, and Nest Gimbal head. Tamron warranties their lenses for 6 years, the catch is "only to the original purchaser".

Only slightly cropped, and the distance would be approximately 60 feet.

When I considered purchasing this lens I read that there seems to be a great variation from one to the other. So what I did was rent one from lens rentals to give it a test because they deduct the price of the rental off the purchase price if you wanted to purchase it, so I got the rental for free and I tested it and it works fine so I kept it.
