Do you shoot some of each or are you all in one way or the other?

Thoughts on when you may reduce the files or when you feel the need to shoot raw?

I never shoot raw, but whenever I consider when I might use raw, I use a Sony multi-exposure in camera HDR - which is done very FAST - or, I just make sure I do not blow the highlights of my JPEGS.

The only "authority wannabes" who would make that claim are still exposing their raw image data captures in the same manner as they expose their JPEG captures and haven't caught on to the very different character of the two distinctly different digital imaging media.

Not at all true! There are plenty of times when we use raw with EBTR or ETTR to handle scenes with high dynamic range or contrast. There are also times we use JPEGs exclusively under tightly controlled conditions.

There are many of us who use hybrid photography techniques, which means blending video and stills and audio and graphics on web sites. You can't do that with raw. There's no raw in video unless you use a high end Red camera. Working with dSLRs or mirrorless gear, JPEGs and video are a close match to each other.

We believe in pre-processing of JPEGs (correct exposure, white balance, and all menu settings) as much as post-processing of raw files. They are completely different workflows for completely different situations. The commercial world is pragmatic, not dogmatic.

I shoot mostly RAW. Much more latitude in post-processing.

If I need JPEGs immediately for some reason, I'll usually shoot RAW + JPEG.... almost never JPEG only.

I review the JPG and work the RAW. The computer cycles the JPGs a lot faster than RAW.

JPEG images are not faster. The camera always gets the image data from the sensor in RAW format. It is converted to JPEG and saved on the memory card. There is no camera with an image sensor that records the image in JPEG format. A JPEG image is a compressed file. I also have pictures of birds in flight, that is easy. I have a picture of a hawk catching a dove in flight! Try to take a picture of a race car going 200mph when the front of the car starts to cross the finish line. I can't even do that (unless I have a lucky day) without the aid of a really fast camera that can take multiple images! Ask a sports photographer (a professional) how he takes those one of a kind pictures!

I can't wait for the GH5... 30 fps 6K stills (18 MP JPEGs) Of course, it's video frame grabbing with an electronic shutter, so you get some rolling shutter effect, but still, 30 fps? That gives an entirely new meaning for "spray and pray!"

Oh, it'll do 1080P video at 180 fps, too...

The new Pentax KP DSLR has 6 FPS with the mechanical shutter or 24 FPS with the electronic, due for release on the 23rd of February. Might be an interesting alternative to waiting for the GH5.

True, IF I had Pentax lenses. And spare change...

I don't need anything right now. We have twins about to enter college, and that is enough! Still, I can dream.

The GH5 will do 9 FPS with tracking AF, and faster without... when using the mechanical shutter.
