Actually, for the first 15 years of my career I always used manual focus as autofocus wasn't there yet! I still use autofocus whenever I can, but it really does not work in falling snow too well.

Wise to give up on autofocus. You have mastered manual operation well. Practice makes perfect! Thanks for sharing.

Very nice work. I especially like #'s 3,4 & 5. The High Key application is very effective.

Wonderful shots, worth a little bit of snow for, the last one must be a new addition to the wildlife line up there!

www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.org Go there and you will get all of the details. It is close to the West Gate in West Yellowstone near the IMAX theater.

John,

I love those shots in the snow and especially the snow covered Bison, and white backgrounds of the wolves with the carcass. Well done. But where, in Yellowstone, is the Discovery Center? I've been there few times, and don't recall such a place.
Thanks,

Bob

What tremendous photos. Winter up here is a special time and place. -31 is about as cold as I have experienced in my seventeen years here and even though I recently moved 50 miles south to the banana belt (Chubbuck/Pocatello) it can still get pretty chilly (-18 wind chill). This next Christmas, I am taking friends from Texas to Yellowstone and in addition to the snow coach ride to Old Faithful Lodge and snowshoeing, plan to go to the Discovery Center.

Your pictures have whetted my appetite, big time. THANKS!

They don't often hibernate at the Discovery Center because, I suspect, there is a food supply. Hibernation is a defense against lack of prey and/or the inordinate energy requirements of hunting during deeply sub-zero temperatures.

Here are some images from snowy Feb 2, 2017. This morning the temperature is 31 degrees -- below zero! Want to trade?

Autofocus is terrible in this much falling snow. I had to go to manual focus. If the subject is still, the best way to manually focus in this snow is to use live view and magnify the face by 10x.

Beautiful wolf photos.
