At the time I had 85 transactions (mostly buying) with 100% rating, the buyer had 14 transactions, they don't show rating for buyer on transaction report.
Since the lens hood was missing from the return I assumed the lens was dropped and the lens hood broken as it was not returned. Lens was repaired at a cost of $474.00. After repair I sent it to B & H and sold it to them, new cost was $4500. So I closed my PayPal account, as they are part of eBay, and they will never see another penny from me.

So true. I usually don't sell valuable items on there anymore for this exact reason. The only way I know of to protect yourself, and it's still not without risks, is place restrictions within your listing on who you will allow to bid on your item. Restrict your auction to buyers with good track records and if someone bids that has negative or no feedback, cancel their bid.

eBay will tell you that everyone has to start as a buyer somewhere. Easy for them to say, their not the ones taking all of the risks.

When it comes to eBay, you should only deal with sellers who have a rating of 99.6% or higher. Also, don't be afraid to ask them questions about the lens, such as does it have any scratches, "cleaning marks" or chips on the front or rear elements, or any haze or fungus on any of the inner elements, or in the case of certain Nikkor "D" lenses, whether any screeching noise is emitted during autofocus, etc. Of course, look at the photos of the lens on a large computer monitor and not on a smartphone or even a tablet to search for imperfections, scratches or signs of drops or general abuse.

Reliable domestic eBay sellers I've dealt with include sellers with the following eBay names: blackswan787 (for a Nikkor 180mm f2.8D IF-ED), yuanfeng.bbw (for a Nikkor 85mm f1.4D IF AF) and camerastop (for a Nikkor 28-70 f2.8D, a Nikkor 35-70 f2.8 AF Zoom and Nikkor 20-35mm f2.8 IF AF).

The best source for vintage or discontinued Nikon lenses on eBay seems to be those sold from Japan, where the Japanese sellers tend to provide more information about the actual condition of the lenses they are selling. For me, shipping from Japan to New York takes about 5-6 days, and all three lenses I've purchased so far from different Japanese dealers have arrived exactly as described and are securely packaged for mail delivery. There don't appear to be any customs issues or surcharges with camera lenses shipped from Japan to the USA either, based on my experience.

Have had no bad experiences on ebay since using paypal. Paypal made me whole on 5 separate occasions in the past few years, without any hassle, in just a few days. They emailed me a prepaid mailing label, and refunded my money a couple of days after the item was received by the seller. As a rule, I only buy from top rated ebay sellers who sell cameras and lenses, or whatever other type item I am looking for. I carefully read the description. If something is left out of the description I post a question, which becomes part of the record. Since I started buying used on ebay I wouldn't even consider buying any new gear unless it cost the same as the used item.

We use paypal on any online purchase or store that accepts it. A couple of years ago my wife bought a pair of walking shoes for $125 from a brand she was happy with in the past. The shoes were advertised as extremely comfortable. My wife got blisters the first time she wore them. We contacted the manufacturer who said they couldn't be returned because they were worn and offered us a $20 coupon. I contacted paypal who refunded our money including shipping and told us not to bother returning the shoes as they couldn't be resold anyway.

Whether needed or not, paypal is extremely effective on the follow through if something is disputed.

My wife deals in antique jewelry which is a lot more complicated than most camera type purchases. On the few occasions she has had a problem with a seller and had to invoke paypal she politely tells the seller that she always wins, and she always does. Paypal has been excellent.

I have had one incident with paypal and will never have another. I bought an eye piece for my telescope that was represented to be in perfect condition. When I got it it looked like a two year had a couple hours of scratching the surface, totally destroying it. I could have had it settled real easy through my credit card (as I have many times in the past) but because it was paypal they said they couldn't do a thing. It took a couple months of hell to get the money back, then they went and hid it in an account and refused to send it back to me, trying to force me to use it on another paypal purchase. It took over 1.5 years and a complaint to the Attorney General to get money back and with no interest for the time they stole my money. No, never again will I use paypal!

You can buy on ebay without using paypal. Not all sellers allow this; they are the ones I stay away from.

Just got a SRT 202 in fantastic shape along with more items in pristine condition from eBay for 75 dollars. Better then advertised. Even the original instruction manual was included. A little homework and the system works fine.

Ebay is not quite the same on all of its sites, I bought a Macbook via ebay.ie that died after 3 days. Paypal took the sellers side and I was out the cost of it. On the plus side I bought another version locally that needed a few repairs and upgrades and I got to make use of a fair few parts making it not the worst deal ever.

The thing is if I had bought via ebay.co.uk I would have ebay buyer protection which I don't have on Ebay.ie The cost is identical but the protection is much better on ebay.co.uk rather than ebay.ie. This was confirmed to me by an ebay customer service agent.

As you can imagine this was a bit of a surprise but ebay has to play ball with the laws and protections put in place where they do business and it appears that UK consumer protection is stronger than Irish consumer protection law.

Sometimes I find i can get a better deal by buying via another ebay site where the item may be priced in a different currency and the exchange rate is better. For Chinese items this can keep an item under the customs threshold, breaking it in a small way can nearly double the price. It can be better to make 2 or 3 small orders than 1 bigger one.

Sorry you had that experience. Can't you also back paypal payments with a credit card and potentially get double protection? Either way, generally ebay protection for the buyer is pretty good in the US. Apparently it varies by geography.

Not legally. They allow you to be double charged (as you are with paypal since a fee is collected by ebay and paypal and they are the same company) but it's illegal to collect double; they call it fraud.

I didn't mean double charging or fraud. Paypal needs to have source to collect funds from, it works like a broker in some senses. It can be a bank account, or it can be a credit card. If a credit card then there would only be one charge but it could be possible to invoke protection from either source. Nothing illegal about that.

Also, Paypal is no longer part of ebay, it was spun out, which may also change things somewhat.
