Interesting. We have a friend who collects and sells native American stuff, including Kachinas. She describes her house as "The Kachina Motel". She does an annual road trip to the Hopi community and knows many of the makers well. Her collection was described as "important" by someone in the know a few years ago. Like everybody in this kind of business, she has made some mistakes, which she politely calls 'Tuition Pieces'.
Cheers!
sure enough. we used to visit Bill Malone at the Hubbel Trading Post frequently, in the '70s and early '80s. his spouse was Navaho, and Bill was fluent in both Hopi and Navaho. and we were able to obtain some lovely tihus (kachinas). they are the spirits which still inhabit this house. i'm glad she has been able to collect and excellent selection. and, as you say, in her business, or mine, mistakes come with the territory, that's for sure. but, then, you just move on.
thanks for your note.
