WOW, talk about a small world. I ran the night defensive positions on the pass (think it was called xan von pass) overlooking Qui Nhon during Tet, 68. I transfered to the 1st Cav immediately after Tet (most of the ARVN PF's took off during Tet). Only spent 5 days in An Khe (3 in processing and 2 going out). I worked the battalion TOC (tactical Operations Center) for 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry out of Camp Evans and was part of the move to Tay Ninh (near Cambodian border) in November. 68. Thanks again for your service, and Welcome Home.

Welcome home to you and thanks for your service.
Even smaller, I worked in the TOC for Qui Nhon Sub-Area Command (aka 593rd GS Gp) of 1st Log. We were in Camp Granite just outside Qui Nhon next to the big cemetery with the big standing buddha statue. Trained with them at Granite City Army Engineers Depot in Illinois (the unit changed from Combat Engineer Group to General Support Group 7 months before shipping out), did the 28 day trip by transport from CA to Nam and then spent 18 months in TOC. By that time I was an SP-5 and someone higher up noticed that the slot I officially held (Reports Clerk) was for E-4 and below only. All our other slots were filled by E-6s and E-7s so I was out, transferred to be the Admin NCO for the Officer's Club system for Central RVN my last six months. Didn't have to work nights anymore, I did 6 months of 12 hour TOC night shifts.

During Tet I came my closest to being killed of my 2+ years In Country. I was told that I was up for TDY guarding the pass that came down behind the POL tank farms by the big ARVN ammo dump outside the city. At that point I hadn't done TDY up there for almost a year because of my jobs with classified documents. The colonel was tired of people complaining about me not going on any TDYs while their people had to go. So he agreed I could go for 1 week, if I made sure at least 4 people knew the combinations to the document safes. OK, taught combos to 1-E8, 1-E9, 1-Cpt, 1-Major. I am packing to leave when our draftsman/cartographer comes out and says he has all his work done for the next two weeks and could he go on Outpost Duty, he wanted to see how well they followed his blueprints for the improved bunkers etc. (Also up until then it was a bit of a vacation, on guard all night and goof off all day.) I am back to doing a report and George is off to the pass.
Less than 3 days later at about 2AM on Tet his bunker outpost was hit by sappers. George and 2 others were killed, 4 wounded and during the day the other 2 guys at the position were wounded. That post had 100% casualties in just less than 12 hours. Three weeks later I got sent up and only stayed 3 nights and 2 1/2 days because when the Colonel asked for some papers none of the 4 guys could remember the combo of that safe. When the chopper brought up the hot meal the outpost got once a day one of the HQ Drivers jumped off with his gear and told me to grab my stuff and get on the chopper, the Colonel wanted his papers. I never went on outpost TDY again, I never even went on any 24 hour guard posts, the one time I did the Colonel sent his driver for me at about 7 AM, no one remembered the safe combos, again. I turned all those classified jobs over to a Cpt and a Major when I was shifted to the Officers Club System office. They couldn't drag me back to open safes because the combos were all changed the day I left the job(s).

Hi there. Just joined this site and want to introduce myself. Recently retired with a new Sony A7II. Sure beats my old 35mm that I bought at a PX in Vietnam in 1968. I am looking to make new friends here and hope to join the 21st century regarding "modern" cameras. I'm in Philadelphia.
