Hi there. Just joined this site and want to introduce myself. Recently retired with a new Sony A7II. Sure beats my old 35mm that I bought at a PX in Vietnam in 1968. I am looking to make new friends here and hope to join the 21st century regarding "modern" cameras. I'm in Philadelphia.

Welcome to the UHH.
My first really good camera was a Miranda Sensorex I got on R&R in Japan in 67.

Where did you take R&R? I did Sydney, AUS in 1968. I can still remember the lady's name.

would the "blackhorse" refer to the 11th ACR?

No Sir. It's the 1st Cavalry Division (1st Bn, 7th Cav). The patch is bright yellow with a black horse head above a slanted black line.

That I know, my son did one tour in Iraq with Charlie, 1, 4 of the 1st Cav as a combat engineer.

But the only unit we ever referred to as the "Black Horse" in Nam was the 11th. It is their official nick name.

My section NCO in Vietnam was a Korean War Veteran and you wouldn't like his explanation of the meaning of the 1st Cav patch.

Thank you for your service and your son. I am smiling over your old NCO's jealous and envious comment about the 1st Cav Patch. For what its worth, the 11th had tracks, we had helicopters.

I know, developed tactics and trained as Air Mobile in US as 11th Air Assault Div (Test) and 2nd Infantry. The 2nd Infantry swapped names, colors etc with 1st Cav which was in Korea and the Air Mobile units arrived in Nam as 1st Cavalry (Airmobile).
I was in Nam late 66 to early 69 (I volunteered to stay, kept my brother from going to Canada. Then he found he could sign as a conscientious objector, picked combat medic and retired after 23 1/2 years. And he had called me John Wayne for being regular army.)
I was with HHQ 593rd Combat Support Group based in Qui Nhon and at one point our sub units ran the base camp for 1st Cav and others in An Khe plus the bases for other units all along Route 19 to west of Pleiku.

I made it to An Khe twice, once as a stop on a flight to Saigon and once as shotgun guard on a jeep driving from Qui Nhon to An Khe. My buddy and room mate (two man room as junior NCOs and barracks nco's) was assistant fire marshal for the whole area and he and his boss had to drive up one Sunday for an inspection of some facility. I had just finished a round of outpost duty, guard relief command and other extra duty and had been given Sunday off as a reward. They needed a shotgun rider for their jeep, and knew I was 1-free that day 2-2nd highest scoring shot in the company and 3-proud owner of a full auto M-14 with bipod and about three times the normal load of mags thanks to my boss the Operations Officer for the group giving me a set of papers telling everyone I had orders to be that heavily armed at all times - something to do with being Classified Documents Clerk, Document Custodian and Classified Courier all in one over titled E-5.
Pretty drive, turned out to be very quiet since most of the combat units that cleared the highway after Tet were still there. Shot a lot of color film of the drive, then the PX left it setting in a conex in the sun at the airfield waiting for a flight to the lab in Saigon and it was cooked, not one single picture came out, the emulsion was melted into rainbow swirls.

WOW, talk about a small world. I ran the night defensive positions on the pass (think it was called xan von pass) overlooking Qui Nhon during Tet, 68. I transfered to the 1st Cav immediately after Tet (most of the ARVN PF's took off during Tet). Only spent 5 days in An Khe (3 in processing and 2 going out). I worked the battalion TOC (tactical Operations Center) for 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry out of Camp Evans and was part of the move to Tay Ninh (near Cambodian border) in November. 68. Thanks again for your service, and Welcome Home.
