Your A-1 is a higher level camera with better features than the AE-1. Following release of the A-1, Canon released the AE-1 Program model in order to incorporate these better features.

About a year ago, just after I parted with my Pentax ME (and lens, winder, etc.) I decided to try 35mm again ... found two AE-1Ps in the area and bought both of them ... gave one to my son (who never used it) and tried a roll of film through this one ... don't know what happened to the prints (*.jpgs) but, about a week ago I loaded another roll of film and am part way through it ... really makes you think about what you are doing ... far to easy for me to get into the "spray & pray" mode ... hope this slows me down ...

My first five primary cameras were film - as of today, counting from when I got my first 35mm camera in 1969, I have used focusing cameras for 47 years, including 37 years using film cameras, 26 of those years using cameras which had to be cocked for each picture. I developed meticulous planning methods (*) before I had a camera capable of taking multiple pictures at a time, and I have no intention of changing my methods; if anything, my fault is forgetting that burst mode is available, thereby occasionally missing what would have been the best picture in a motion sequence because it probably was between the two I did get.

(*) my wife of 37-1/2 years has learned to translate "five minute photo stop" into "the five minutes starts after I've spent fifteen to thirty minutes looking around".

Ha, indeed it is merely a camera and not a puppy; thank you for the welcome!

My original intent in posting this picture was to get some feedback regarding lighting, angle etc. I thought the wooden work bench beneath the camera made an interesting backdrop. So I posted this picture in the Gallery section and eagerly waited for comments.

Well, ostensibly moderators thought the picture had little "artistic" value and soon moved it to this section for general discussion. And I must admit it has generated some discussion since the move.

But I would still like some technical feedback on the quality of the photo, if anyone feels so inclined.

Best,

Jason

I had one too that I bought a few years later maybe '78 or '79; it was a great camera. I last used it in about 2008 and traded it in to B & H on my Canon 60D. I think they allowed $160 on it which may have been a bit low, but was probably a bit over 50% of what I paid new. I like the features on the DLSR and don't miss it at all

If they gave you $160 for the AE-1 for trade in on a Canon 60D . . . then you ripped off B&H!

They are only worth $25-$50 nowadayz . . .

I had an AE-1 I bought used for $150 back in 1982 . . . I gave it to a friend of mine.

Still have two of the four F1's (two were stolen) and one still with a motor drive, two A-1's (with motor drives), a Nikon F2 and F4 and a boat load of lenses for them.

Used to be a newspaper photographer.

No kidding and thanks for the photos of your cameras!

I must say that the geometry of your Nikon looks strange compared to your Canons.

Best,

Jason

I sold both of mine in a garage sale for $15 ea. Sorry I did that and wish I had kept one of them.

But that's all I could get for them. I gave away my dark rooms stuff.

I doubt that they have any real monetary value, other than as 'vintage' items, but nostalgia has a monetary value. Some people will pay for that.

I had my house burgled, or 'burglarized' as is said in the USA, and my original AE-1 and T90 and so on went away. I found decent replacements on e-bay for decent prices, and it is nice to have my family back. Especially with some affordable FD glass on it. The thieves didn't take some of the other stuff, so I pretty much have a working system. It all works, but it is mainly nostalgia....

I typed wrong above . . .

I have a Nikon F5 . . . not an F4.

Plus I still have all of my darkroom equipment (except the sink and GraLab darkroom cabinet/counters).

While I miss the good old days of film and the darkroom, I have no intention of going back to it.

I was one of those holdouts that thought that digital would never be as good as film.

But one day I finally got the digital bug . . . bought my first digital camera (a Panasonic Lumix) . . . and haven't shot a roll of film since!

Now I have 17 digital cameras, including five DSLR's and two mirrorless cameras.

This shot from a Canon T3i (jpeg straight from camera):

Still have my AE-1 and I will not part with it. When film comes back, I will be ready.

I doubt that film will ever come back.

If anything . . . I think color film will go away altogether as the film processing machines go away (parts are getting scarce to keep them going).

And film processing machines are not made anymore.

And even if they were . . . we wouldn't be able to afford to put one in our basements and keep them running.

Not to mention that, in the end, if you really want color prints, they are printed digitally anyway . . . so why bother?

Don't get me wrong . . . I love film and miss it dearly.

But reality tells me that digital is here to stay . . . until some new technology comes along to replace it!

Black and white film will probably be around for a long time to come since it can be easily developed and printed by hand at home.

Maybe one day I'll dig out all of that darkroom equipment I've been storing in my garage for the last 20 years and take up a new old hobby!

Still have a couple of the Elans as well, a II and a IIe. I think there's film way back in the freezer, too. Cameras on the shelf along side of my Pentax 645. Still have some film for that too, I believe.

Me too! I have my Elan11e and Elan7e and batteries & film in the freezer. Plus my 3 AE-1's. But I could part with them I guess. It took me a while to go Digital also

I also have an AE-1 that did some traveling with me when I was station aboard the USS Midway (CV-41) It has taken many rolls of film and slides over the years. Can't remember where I purchased it. I also bought several lens from individuals aboard the ship. I use to process my own film in the hobby shops at Iwakuni Japan and Camp Pendelton Ca. Iwakuni had a color processing lab. After my first tour in 1978 i worked in a commercial film processing plant processing black and white and color. I processed some film that was taken in late 20' and thirties. It was interesting to see what people were photographing back then. Some of these rolls of film were brought in by family members after their parents, grandparents and great grandparents had passed away when they were going through their estate. My boss in the lab was a retired Navy photographer and he was a slave driver.
