Took your advice and moved up to the D7200

Just wondering why you are desiring a full frame? I got bit with the bug and bought an old 14MP FX, but almost never use it. It is good for landscapes, architecture and interior shots as it gives a wider angle of view. But the DX gives a 1.5x more reach with any lens compared to the FX, so it is better for birds, wildlife, flowers, etc. The DX has a bit less depth of field than the FX with the same lens, but that can be solved with a fast lens on the DX.

I have a D7200 as well, and I love it! I have been lamenting over the last week though for not doing more research before purchasing it. Just because now I "wish" I had gotten the full frame D700. My D60 (a gift several years ago) was good too (still have it) but I was ready for something more. I didn't realize at the time that is was a cropped frame- didn't even know there was such a thing, as I was a total hobbyist. I'm getting more into photography now and after reading all the cropped vs. full frame convos- I want the D700 now, too. Though my husband is not near as passionate about my "hobby"... sigh....But I am looking everywhere for a good used one. I LOVE my camera but feel as though I may be missing out, not having a full frame. I haven't utilized the 7200 like I know it can be. Maybe a cheat sheet is what I need as well. Have FUN with your new camera!

I "guess" it's because I feel like I'm missing out. I've never shot a full frame (I know that now) but have read so many reviews on the D700, since buying my 7200 that I feel like I should have done more research before buying. You make me feel better though! I do shoot a lot of landscapes because we do a lot of traveling, but I've really started doing more portrait type shoots now (for family & friends). Do you think the cropped frame is better for portraits?

I honestly don't know. I know the FX gives shallower depth of field with a given lens at a given aperture than the DX, but you can get very shallow depth of field with a crop sensor and a fast lens like a 50mm f1.4, which then has an equivalent focal length of 75mm, just right for portraits. Like I said before, my FX mostly sits in the box. I just bought a lens I have been looking at for a long time for flowers, the Nikkor-S 55mm f1.2 manual focus. I will try it on the FX, though the depth of field at f1.2 is razor thin on the DX, too thin for portraits as just a single feature on a face would be in focus. If you have to have an FX, go for something used, which is what I did. I got the 14MP Kodak DCS Pro 14N with the Nikon F mount for $400 on ebay a couple of years ago (poor in low light, but great in sunshine or with flash, no live view but I can review shots taken on the camera lcd screen). A used D600 or D610 can be had for $800 or less on ebay. If you buy from a top rated seller (100% rating) who sells cameras, and read the description carefully you can buy with confidence. If the item is not as described, Paypal will refund all your money including postage both ways.

I'm trying to talk some sense into myself...this photography is a pricey hobby! (But as I told my husband, so is hunting and fishing.) I love making pictures and I have been looking at used options EVERYWHERE and I didn't realize that PayPal would do that. I'm going to gift my daughter my D60 since her camera has quit working and it makes me feel like I'm opening space for the 700. We'll see... 😁 I have read nothing on the 600 but all the used 700's are running (the lowest I've seen) $700. Thanks so much for all the info- I'm taking notes!
