My 17-year old neighbor wanted some head shots to enter into a local magazines "Young Model" contest. The winner gets a little contract with a local agency. They can only enter one 5x7 head shot, and I've narrowed it down to these three, but would like some trained eyes to help me decide which one to encourage her to send in.

If you could pick only one, which would it be? Thanks team!

Excellent point Ward. I will make it so. Maybe too much on this one? Will work on it.

I like #1. But u might want to play with the colors in the pic. She looks a little blue.

#1 overall. If you have a chance to do more let me tell you what I like about each to help with future shoots

#1 Just a bit to bright, love highlight on the hair
#2 eyes are outstanding, Shadows is distracting and a slight tilt of the head would help
#3 Hair is good, pose good, eyes are a little dark
Just my opinion take it for what its worth

Norm...This is just the kind of feedback I am looking for. I have until June 1st to come up with a final photo for her, so if I can get her away from her boyfriend for 20 minutes I can try again using your advice. I am more of a landscape kind of photog, so this is not exactly in my comfort zone. Thanks for taking the time to jot some notes.

Great lighting in the first pic. Definitely my favorite. I agree that it is a little bright, but when you adjusted it I think you darkened it just a tad bit too much ( my personal opinion). I like her smile in 1 and 3, i don't really like anything about 2. If I may make a suggestion, I would not dress her in red if you can choose. It is a hard color to control, but you did very well at controlling it. Maybe it's just a bad idea to use red for someone at my level in photography. I really hope she wins the contest!

Great lighting in the first pic. Definitely my fav... (show quote)

Thanks Jared. I agree about the re-do being a little too dark, so here is one more attempt. Even subtle changes make a difference don't they! I know she has a killer black dress she wore to her prom, so maybe I can get her to put that on, then try to re-create the expression in this photo. I think she is quite photogenic, so shouldn't be hard to get another nice pic. Thanks for the thoughts.

IF you do a reshoot, make sure she smiles, 1 is by far the best.
