We were flying into a camp at the end of the fjord, noticed this lonely sailboat in the ice, was the beginning of May if I remember.

I liked Graham's sailboat for the opposite reason I like this one. In Graham's photo the boat is dominant. Here the glacier is the star. It is massive and powerful. The boat being dwarfed by the glacier gives a sense of scale. Well done. (Hope that I did not offend by comparing your photo to another post; but it seemed a natural comparison to me.)

Your "broken concrete" processing makes the ice look like......broken concrete.

To coin your own phrase...."it's horrible".

This is an arresting image. I wonder if the boat gets a little lost though.

I would play with techniques to separate the boat from the background.

If I get the time today, i might give it a try and if anything worth looking at results, I will repost.

Great picture.

This is an interesting and sharply captured image that I've looked at several times before trying to comment. The scene itself is something I yearn to see and photography. Absolutely gorgeous. The details you've wrested from the ice are intriguing, but the way the water and boat are presented seem overly harsh to me. The magic of ice floating on water seems to ask for softer approaches. I'd bet this was extremely contrasty light, something like I struggled with in daytime shots in Iceland of ice and snow around water.

I'm wondering how you'd feel about posting the unedited version?

It was a cloudy day in May. The Glacier IS that color blue, the pack ice was a problem, but to try to soften it turned it into a slab, ice has high albedo, it reflects a lot of light. Feel free to try your hand.

Thanks for your input.
You say you were a flight engineer, you must have lots of photos taken from the air or from different areas you flew to. Let's see a few, the people on the Hog would love to see your collection.

Here is another shot taken prior to the first one. Minimal processing, a bit of Curves for contrast, and a tiny bit of sharpening. Due to the high reflective property of the ice some detail is lost, it had to sharpened a bit.

This was taken a bit further away to show relative size of the sailboat and the glacier (mountain). This was a fjord off Glacier Bay.

If you knew anything about pack ice, growlers and calving glaciers (which you apparently do not) the ice does resemble broken concrete, and in some cases is as dense and hard as concrete.

I have some shots of the boat. There was some concern that he may have been trapped in the ice so we swung around, he was okay. He had lots of open water. I'll see if I can find them.

Nice shot.

This sounds a bit like a challenge. The last one I saw in here had an unfortunate outcome (for some) but this one looks risk free and we might get to see some interesting shots.

Here is a closer shot of the sailboat, just a leisurely sail amongst the ice and seals. This shot should be viewed in download. Lots of open water for him.
