Its pretty much impossible to beat the Nikon DF in low light shooting. Here is a pic taken 9 days ago at dark, I could barely see the owl in the tree at all with my naked eye. Shot with the Nikon Df, Nikon 200-500mm at F5.6 and 500mm. 1/125 sec hand held, with +1 EC, ISO 12,800.

No issues with either noise or detail here! Great shot!

Which camera has the best sharpness at an ISO of 2,000 - 5000? I have a Nikon D800 with either the 24-70 or 70-200 2.8 lens and shoot my granddaughter’s volleyball games. Usually due to the venue’s poor lighting, I have to shoot at least an ISO of 1000 – 2000. Sometimes even higher. When I go above 2000, the noise starts to get bad. I can clean it up in lightroom, but it softens the photo quite a bit.

Is there a camera out there that is sharp at higher ISOs? I am willing to spend $4,000 - $5,000 but would like to keep it less. It does not have to be Nikon, any brand that works will be fine.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

My understanding is that the D500 is intended to address this need.

I'm liking my new Nikon D500 in low light. It cost about 2K. I shoot amateur ice hockey in atrocious lighting. In aperture or shutter priority, at 10 fps--With its EV, AF, and Auto ISO, the hockey moms (and dads) love the shots I've been getting. Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 works like a charm.

The champ is the Sony A7S or S II. Unfortunately you will lose AF with Nikon lenses, as well as lens stabilization. The S II will still give you 3 axis stabilization, but probably limited to about 2 stops effectiveness, depending on the lens.

Look at high ISO performance, anti flicker capability and a frame rate you need. I'm not a Nikon shooter but the Canon 1Dx MkII does very well in these areas of performance. If you wish to stay Nikon look at the Nikon camera with these features. If you have the money to spend you I'll not be disappointed.

See this topic regarding Canon choices a few days ago at: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-421584-1.html

I posted some photos from a Canon 6D at sky-high ISO's. It does a fantastic job, and has been called the "second-best full frame camera ever", although it is not good at fast-moving objects and does not have a built-in flash. However - even though you use Nikon - with your budget, and this camera being about $1100 if you get a Canon certified refurbished version, you would have money left over for some really nice Canon glass!

The Sony a7sii is at the top of the list for high ISO, shoot 4k video and is very sharp. Check out the reviews and watch some videos on you tube.

I have used the D500 at High ISO and able to reduce the Noise easily with Neat Image without softening

The Df is certainly a contender.

Download a trial copy of DxO Optics Pro Elite and try processing your photo with Optics Pro's "Prime" noise reduction feature. I've seen it remove noise from photo's taken with ISO in the range of 100,000--without degrading sharpness. It costs much less than a new camera.
