Hello looking for some feedback on the sigma 300mm 2.8. Hockey and Baseball are my sports of interest. The Canon version is much more expensive and is it worth the extra 2500.00.

B&H has this 300-mm lens for $3,400.00.
Have you considered the Sigma's 150-600mm OS Sports or Contemporary zoom lenses? Not as fast, but more versatile.

It's a very good lens, but limited in use as are all primes. The Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 Sport lens is AMAZING, the ONLY 300mm F2.8 ZOOM on the market. The ability to recompose via zooming is invaluable for indoor sports like basketball, volleyball, hockey and wrestling. $3400 brand new

I echo MT Shooter's assessment of the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 lens. It is simply awesome. Here is an example image from the Blue Angel's performance in June 2012 for the beginning of the Fort McHenry Bicentennial celebration. This was shot from a rooftop venue in Baltimore about a mile away from the planes. If you look at the full size image you can read the large writing on the side of the planes and clearly see the pilot's helmets.

I Purchased this lens for football at night. Haven't looked back. Its been 3 years and love it. It is 1 generation older than whats out now but its extremely fast and crisp. I recommend this lens without hesitation and its a reasonable price.

Thanks for the reply. Do you feel this lens will give sharp photos and and sharp focus? Have you used it for sports.

If you are talking about he Canon 300mm f/2.8 II then the answer is yes. Besides being sharp it also is very fast when it comes to focusing. This lens is one of if not the sharpest that Canon makes. As MT shooter said, it a prime and that can be limiting. If you have the light a 1.4 extender takes it to 420mm f/4.0 on a FF body We shoot BIF and soccer and it does everything we want it to. On the crop body 7DMKII with out the 1.4 extender you get a view equivalent to 480mm at f/2.8.

Thanks for the reply. What feedback can you give on the Sigma 120-300 2.8 much more affordable at 2700.00 less then the Canon 300 2.8. Will be using a canon 5d mkiii body. Thanks

I haven't used that Sigma lens but MT shooter says it is good and that a zoom can be more versatile at times. I use a 70-200mm f/2.8 but everything longer are primes. I know that you are asking about a 300mm lens but take a look at the Canon 100-400 II, not as much money but a great match -up for the 5DMKIII.

It's f/4.5-f/5.6, not as fast as either the 300mm Sigma or Canon but the 5DMKIII is very good with noise. If you are able go to a photo store or if you know someone with these lenses try them out before you spend your hard earned cash. Whatever you spend you should be happy with.

Are shooting for your own pleasure or to please a customer? If it's for a customer then buy the expensive one, if it's for you buy the less expensive. Non-pros make too much out of sharpness;virtually all lenses are better now than they were not long ago. There's more to a photo than sharp focus.
