I would only get the Nikon hoods that were designed for those lenses. Not only for the fit but if they are tulip shaped hoods, the tulip shape has been specifically designed for that lens.

The HB-34 is the correct hood for the 55~200, the HB-69 is correct for the 18~55 lens. They should not be interchanged!
This video explains how to attach and remove the HB-34, the procedure is the same for the HB-69:

Amazing video. He spends over a minute taking it out of the box. "How to Attach and Detach" is virtually ignored. Nikon hoods have little white marks on them. Are they decorations, or do they serve a purpose? It would have been helpful for him to show what mark on the hood lines up with what point on the camera. He seemed to be trying to hide that in his "instructional" video. Maybe when he does his next video, he'll find someone who can speak.

I purchased the Nikon HB-34 Lens hood for the Nikon 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-s DX Nikor and the Nikon HB-69 for the AF-s DX Nikor 18-55mm VRII Lens. (Nikon 5300) These were recommended on the Adorama website for each lens. Today I tried changing them to the other lens. They are a little difficult to get on, but once on they lock in. The big difference now is the longer hood is on the 55 lens and the shorter one is on the 200 lens. Would that make a difference? Not sure if I should return them or use them the way they are now fitting. Thanks for the input.

OK, you have to line up the lens hood to make it work. Takes some time to get used to. Place your lens hood face down on a table, now look at it, it should have four marks on it, two will be one symbol and two will be another, you want to use either one that is has one line connected to a solid dot, not the open circle with the line next to it, now, line either of the solid dots with line attached up with a small white marking at the end of your lens, their should be two of these, either one will do, line the mark up with the hood and lens, it should fit snug, now, twist counter clockwise until it locks in position.

I line up the printing horizontal to the right (from behind the camera) and then twist a bit each way till I feel it slip towards me a smidge. Then turn it left to engage. When it clicks the printing will be on top.

In contrast to their lenses Nikon hoods are righty tighty.

You do the same with hood backwards for storage.

You have the right hoods so if they are not clicking you are not getting them seated.

I ought to be shot for posting that link!! Didn't view it first, just went by the title. Hopefully, the OP found my comment helpful. I shall now crawl back into my hole!

Being shot is a bit extreme. I think flogging would be sufficient.

I often trust titles and post things that I should have left alone.

the first video showed there was a mark on the hood a bit like a lollipop -0 it looked to me that the stick lines up initially with a white dot near the end of the lens. A clockwise twist lined the lollipop end with the white dot.

Should work, I did get caught out one time with a pentax hood for an 18-55mm da lens 2 versions looking very similar, a weather sealed version and a standard kit version of the lens. I didn't even consider that they would change hood mounting between versions but they did. why they did that? I've got a lens hood i can't use till i buy the weather sealed lens... more gas :)

I'm wondering why the lenses didn't come with hoods. Or were they lost or broken? If you had the original hoods and kept them you could visually compare them with the new ones and maybe that way see what is the problem.

I purchased two Nikon lens hoods for my Nikon 5300. One for the 85 lens and the other for the 200 lens. The lens hoods seem to big for the lens and keep falling off. The ones I purchased were the ones recommended for each lens. Any suggestion on how to keep it on the camera, or would I be better off returning them?
Thanks.

Glad you discovered which hood fits which lens. I am surprised they were not labeled when you received them. Even though these two lenses take the same size filters, determined by the lens diameter, the outside dimensions of the lens differ. This is why they are not interchangeable.

As for tape, bad idea no matter what kind you use. Not just because it looks bad, it also can interfere with the action of the lenses. Neither of these lenses are IF (internal focus), so the barrel needs to be able to freely move in and out when focusing. Perhaps the tape would not interfere, but still do not recommend it.

It does amaze me that people buy things and when having a question, do not call the store where they purchased them. I have had problems figuring out multiple photography purchases, and ALWAYS have been able to speak with someone who could help. It doesn't matter whether it is an expensive item or one that cost very little...

Return them and buy the original ones.
Multicoatings are so good today that I do not find the need for a lens hood as critical as I did in the past.
